Let’s get started! :

Let’s get started! You will need the right tools This is NOT one of the right tools! Use them to fix cars or your plumbing but not for making jewelry.

This is an example of the right type of tool :

This is an example of the right type of tool These are “Round Nose” or “Wire Bending” pliers. The jaws are “Soft” to prevent creasing or damaging the wire when it is bent.

Needlenose “Smooth Jaw” pliers :

Needlenose “Smooth Jaw” pliers

Needlenose pliers :

Needlenose pliers These come in a variety of jaw lengths. The ones with short jaws are often known as “Chain Nose.” Note how there are no “Gripping Teeth” on the jaws. Because the jaws have been precisely ground, they will have sharp edges. It is a very good idea to use an inexpensive diamond file to dull these edges before using them. You will need two of them

Flush wire cutting pliers :

Flush wire cutting pliers

Flush cutting pliers :

Flush cutting pliers These are designed to cut soft wire and should NEVER be used to cut “Memory Wire!” These have specially designed cutting edges that create a “flat cut” on one side and a “chisel point cut” on the other.

Looping Pliers :

Looping Pliers These are designed to make “perfect” loops and jump rings from wire stock. We will see a demonstration of these in a later lesson.

Wire straightening pliers :

Wire straightening pliers As the name implies, these are used to straighten wire and headpins. The jaws have replaceable nylon tips.

Let’s make a simple yet very popular pair of earrings :

Let’s make a simple yet very popular pair of earrings The tools you will need: Flush cutting pliers Bending pliers Needle-nose pliers

Components :

Components Earwires or leverbacks, Headpins, Main beads or drops, Accent beads and Beadcaps

First step :

First step Stack an accent bead, beadcap, main bead, another beadcap, and another accent bead on a single headpin. Examine what you have done and decide if this is the “look” you are tying to achieve. If it is, then continue to the next step. If not, then select different components until you are satisfied with the results.

Important! A few “rules” to go by: :

Important! A few “rules” to go by: Don’t place a glass or crystal bead directly against the head of a headpin. The pin may cause damage to the bead. Don’t place a beadcap against plastic beads or real pearls. The cap may scratch the bead or pearl. This also applies to faux pearls with a “sprayed on” nacre (the outer layer of the bead). Never string glass, crystal, pearl or plastic beads so that they butt together. They will become severely worn. This is why real pearls strung on a silk cord are spaced by a knot.

Starting the loop :

Starting the loop Using the very tip of your needlenose pliers, grasp the end of the headpin and bend it to an angle of about 45 degrees. Don’t grasp the wire too tightly. It may cause damage to the beads. Hold it just enough to allow the pliers to bend the wire. Change tools and grasp the wire with the bending pliers. Because they are tapered, the tip of the jaws will make small loops and the large end will make big loops. Using your free hand, bend the wire around to form a tight hook.

Second Bend :

Finishing the loop :

Finishing the loop While holding the assembly upright, use the flush cutting pliers to remove the excess wire. Angle the pliers so that they are about 45 degrees AND the jaws point toward the top of the upper spacer bead. Make sure that the flush side of the jaws is “up.” Now cut.

Cut complete :

Tucking the hook :

Tucking the hook Using the needlenose pliers, grasp the open end of the hook, Now, curl the wire to close the hook and tuck the free end into the top of the upper spacer bead. The flat cut should now rest against the wire as it goes into the spacer bead.

Attaching the “Drop” :

Attaching the “Drop” The completed assembly is called a drop In this example we have made one drop for each ear There are two ways to attach the drop Reopen the loop in the drop Open the loop in the earwire Attach the drop and close the loop

Finishing :

Finishing Hold the “earring” upright Carefully examine the assembly to verify that all the components are straight and hang properly As required, adjust the components

Congratulations! :

Congratulations! You have finished your first earring

Creating saleable inventory :

Creating saleable inventory The trick to making enough earrings to sell involves a little planning By laying out different colors, bead caps, and accent beads you can create an assembly line This will allow you to quickly make several variations of this single drop theme With practice, you should be able to make 10 pairs in one hour

Want to sell them? :

Want to sell them? To calculate the sale price, you should know how much each component costs For simple drop earrings, multiply this cost by 3 Then add your labor cost Don’t forget to add your marketing costs We will address markets and marketing costs in a future video

For now, thanks for watching! :
