PERO Or SINO Translating the English word BUT : 

PERO Or SINO Translating the English word BUT Both words ‘pero’ and ‘sino’ mean ‘but’.

Using Pero: Is used more frequently and commonly : 

Using Pero: Is used more frequently and commonly to translate ‘but’ in all cases except when it in the situations outlined below. Examples: I love my children but they upset me sometimes. Yo quiero a mis hijos pero me enojan a veces. My son does not sleep much but he always has energy. Mi hijo no duerme mucho pero siempre tiene energía.

Using SINO : 

Using SINO It is not as familiar as ‘pero’. It tends to mean “but rather” or “on the contrary”. It is used when a negative assertion is corrected with an affirmative one; as in “not this but that.”

Examples: : 

Examples: The chair is not green but yellow. La silla no es verde sino amarilla. Her sister in law is not a lawyer, but a doctor. Su cuñada no es abogada sino médica.
