The European Association for the Education of Adults: a non-governmental organisation with almost 100 member organisations working in the field of adult learning in 34 European countries EAEA members in turn represent more than 5000 regional and local organisations, which reach between 40 – 60 million participants the EAEA is funded by its members in December 2002 the European Commission approved a 3-year core funding for the EAEA as a European association.

The aims of the EAEA: to promote the development of adult learning to encourage co-operation in adult learning at a European level to lobby international bodies so that they adopt policies which respond to the needs of the adult population in Europe to make it easier for non-governmental organisations to work together and play an active role in the international scene. Adult Education in Turkey and Europe – Integration Through Lifelong Learning Istanbul 25-28 February, 2004 The EAEA co-ordinates the NGO Platform on the Future Objectives for Training and Education Systems in Europe. Working with 5 European associations: CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility), EfVET (European Forum for Vocational Education and Training), Euro-WEA (Workers Educational Association), EVTA (European Vocational Training Association), SOLIDAR (an alliance of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) who are involved in social service provision, international co-operation, humanitarian aid and life-long learning). Main theme: A focus on basic skills, with the collection of good practice examples to be analysed in 2004, with recommendations to the EU.

Adult Education in Turkey and Europe – Integration Through Lifelong Learning Istanbul 25-28 February, 2004 Developing good practice We led or were a key partner in projects to develop good practice: MALL - `To Make up Arrears of Lifelong Learning’ aims: to identify and find solutions to difficulties in transnational projects widen participation of adult learning providers in transnational projects; involving organisations from 11 Central-Eastern European and Baltic countries (co-ordinated by the EAEA Budapest Link Office) More: www.eaeabudapest.hu/mall

TRANSFINE - `Transfer between Formal, Informal and Non-Formal Education’ aims: overview of tools for recognising and valuing learning (co-ordinated by EUCEN) a follow-up proposal (REFINE) is to test tools in different countries and contexts. More: www.transfine.net Test Forces: aim: innovative self-study modules on the history, geography, political life, economy and culture of 4 accession and candidate countries – Bulgaria, Hungary, Lithuania and Poland. Adult Education in Turkey and Europe – Integration through Lifelong Learning Istanbul 25-28 February, 2004 Co-operating with other international organisations We worked with CEDEFOP (European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training). We attended its conference and responded to its call for experts. We participated in the CONFINTEA + 6 conference, Bangkok (the six-- year follow up to the UNESCO Conference, 1997).
