BEST SPECIAL EDITION:

BEST SPECIAL EDITION “The paper took advantage of its 75th anniversary to remind its readers of its steep history, mission, and crusades in education, politics, health, community involvement, and very aspect of Houston life. The Defender did a commendable job of modeling the relevance of Black newspapers to the quality and advancement of the Black cause.” 3RD PLACE The Houston Defender

BEST SPECIAL EDITION:

BEST SPECIAL EDITION “This entry wins the prize for putting a spotlight on a contemporary issue of great importance – the diversity and inclusion of minorities and women in all aspects of contemporary life: business, politics, government, education, and employment. The stories show the reader efforts going on in the media. Education, government and industry in a clear crisp style.” 2ND PLACE The St. Louis American

BEST SPECIAL EDITION:

BEST SPECIAL EDITION “This entry brilliantly achieved what it set out to do – to show that Blacks making history should be celebrated every day, not once a year. Diving into the paper’s 2005 archives, the special edition chronicled the people who made history in Winston-Salem throughout 2005. The range of stories of ordinary people making history in 2005 was a pleasure to read. The content was rich and the depth of reporting and clarity of writing were outstanding. The photography and tie-in advertising were exemplary.” 1ST PLACE The Chronicle

CLASS V:

CLASS V IDA B. WELLS BEST NEWS STORY

BEST NEWS STORY:

BEST NEWS STORY “The Free Press got its hands on the data regarding Henrico County spending, and did the math. It added up to what the headline on the article describes as an outrage. The county spent $178 million, in one year on goods and services; and $3.9 million (2.2%) of that amount has been approved for minority-owned companies. The article puts the situation in context by showing how Henrico County’s largely white governing body has an approach to doing business with minorities that is out of step with the state government, which has for years, promoted their commitment to buying from minority-owned businesses.” 3RD PLACE The Richmond Free Press

BEST NEWS STORY:

BEST NEWS STORY “This entry takes a complicated, emotional subject–immigration–and explains why African Americans have a huge economic, political, and social stake in how the nation chooses to deal with the millions of people who are in the USA illegally.” 2ND PLACE The Houston Defender

BEST NEWS STORY:

BEST NEWS STORY “From the beginning of the piece – the very first word in the headline on this article - the Capital Outlook was crystal clear in telling readers the real cause of the death of the fourteen-year-old boy at a boot camp. The article included sufficient details from the second autopsy to shine light on the ineptness of the medical examiner that had found that the boy died of ‘natural causes.’ The article also put the boy’s death in contact by telling readers about the effectiveness of activist and elected officials in pushing for additional investigations and the abolition of boot camps.” 1ST PLACE The Capitol Outlook
