The COMET* project:

The COMET* project *COMET is subsidised by the European Union

The COMET Objective:

The COMET Objective COMET explores and realises the potential of converged messaging infrastructures with the objective to create global enabling technology for an easy-to-use and easy-to-activate messaging services that will allow end-users to navigate and manage their messages anytime and anywhere, irrespective of network, access technology or device being used.

Why COMET is needed:

Why COMET is needed Simplified , Intuitive Messaging user experience allows users to navigate and manage their messages irrespective of message type, bearer or device Ubiquitous messaging service Easy-to-access and easy-to-use messaging service Differentiating messaging experience with rapid time-to-market Evolution for Next Generation Messaging infrastructure end-to-end advanced 3G/IMS compliant enabling technology for easy-to-activate and easy-to-use converged messaging services Reduce cost by replacing expensive infrastructures Innovative and essential to take the lead in the creation of open converged messaging technology in Europe Avoid proprietary lock-ins Standardization is key

Unprecedented Convergence:

Unprecedented Convergence

User’s communication needs:

User’s communication needs Notes: None “I’ll be late, cu at 8” Thoughts/Emotion: Possible “I love you, baby” Transactions: Quick “Where do we meet for lunch?” Conversations: Instant “Hi John, what’s up?” Communication need Reply needed Strength of messaging type

Towards IMS and converged messaging:

Towards IMS and converged messaging Deferred MAS IM SMS 2G Circuit Switched 3G Packet switched IMPS SIP/IMS Immediate Messaging type Product Messaging standard Network type

COMET Goals:

COMET Goals Contributions to relevant standardisation bodies, with focus on IETF, OMA and 3GPP Definition of an open, end-2-end converged messaging architecture Creation of client user interfaces and reference implementation Creation of server architecture and reference implementation Definition of an open telecoms-grade server platform framework Models and tools for end-to-end quality-of-service control of converged messaging services Validation and demonstration of converged messaging capabilities

Key Challenges:

Key Challenges Transparent utilisation of heterogeneous network, transport and access device resources including SMS, MMS, Email, Instant Messaging, Voice-mail and Videomail, 2, 2,5 and 3G mobile devices Test the usability and performance of novel architecture and user interface models, on a proof-of-concept implementation Demonstrate production quality operations with real use-cases and access to “legacy” systems

COMET approach:

COMET approach IMS approach Aims for service innovation only Ignores interworking with old world No evolutionary approach COMET approach Customer centric communication Cross-channel user experience / branding Network and device agnostic IMS/SIP with ‘Legacy’ messaging support Content storage for offline users Presence and preferences based delivery
