Physiology Presentation Ch. 3, 4, & 5 Melissa A. Beutler

Digestion :

Digestion Digestion is the process of how complex foods are broken down into nutrients in a form that the body can utilize them. The oral cavity, also known as the mouth, is the beginning part of the digestive system and its process.

Process of Digestion :

Process of Digestion The digestive system is also known as the alimentary canal. Another name for it is the gastrointestinal tract. The primary functions of the digestive system are the digestion and absorption of food taken into the body, and the elimination of solid waste products.

The Digestive System :

The Digestive System Nutrients are moved through the small intestines and then dispersed to other major organs Nerve and hormone regulators that control the process of digestion.

Respiration :

Respiration Primary function is to obtain oxygen for use by body's cells & eliminate carbon dioxide that cells produce Includes respiratory airways leading in and out of the lungs plus the lungs themselves

Components of Respiration :

Components of Respiration The components of respiration also assist with circulation Respiration provides energy to the body

Cellular respiration :

Cellular respiration Stage 1: Glycolysis occurs in cytoplasm Stage 2: Krebs cycle occur in the matrix of mitochondria. Stage 3: In electron transport chain, the e- move from one carrier molecule to another until they combine with oxygen and hydrogen ions to form water molecule.

Circulation :

Circulation Movement in a circle or circuit, especially the movement of blood through bodily vessels as a result of the heart's pumping action. The movement of blood through the vessels of the body that is induced by the pumping action of the heart and nerves to distribute nutrients and oxygen to and remove waste products from all parts of the body

Slide 9:

Movement or passage through a system of vessels, as of water through pipes; flow. A biological organ system whose primary function is to move substances to and from cells Circulatory System

How do the 3 processes interrelate? :

How do the 3 processes interrelate? Digestion -Break down food for nutrients Respiration -Nutrients broken down into molecules and released to major organs Circulation -Molecules help blood flow, oxygen and energy dispersed throughout the body
