Discourse Community Simple: A “community” of people of like mind who form and therefore communicate similar messages (discourse) Rhetorical: A “social group that communicates at least in part via written texts and shares common goals, values, and writing standards, a specialized vocabulary, and specialized genres” Beaufort, College Writing and Beyond An important feature of a discourse community is that it is organized for or connected by a common purpose (not a loosely-knit group) 2 8 9
