Sergey Kovalenko Art Music : Ani Lorac (live) Author : Beatrice Vaisman

Sergei Kovalenko was born in 1980 in Kontop, Ukraine, and works in the tradition of Soviet Ukrainian painting. He graduated from the Kharkov Pedagogical Institute and was subsequently accepted by the Kharkov Art Academy where he completed his studies in 2010. On graduation, his Diploma work was judged by the Academy as the best painting of 2010 and now hangs in the main hall as an example of modern multifigured genre painting.  He was immediately offered a teaching position within the Department of Painting. During his time as a student at the Academy, Kovalenko worked in the studio of the People’s Artist, Victor Chaus, an honour reserved only for exceptional students. The emerging artist is known for his compositionally-exciting and colourful still lifes as well as his plein air sketches of landscapes in Carpatia and Crimea, all of which are approached with bold but light brushwork. He has participated in numerous Kharkov Art Academy exhibitions to date, including one held at the Kharkov Museum of Art. He is well represented in the US, and recent exhibitions include participation in a major group exhibition, ″The Russians Return″ at the Elder Gallery in North Carolina, “Russian and Ukrainian Impressionism” at the Silvana Gallery in California, and ongoing representation by Gallery Russia in Arizona. Besides the States, his work can be found in a large number of private collections in the UK, Ukraine, Russia, and Croatia.:
