Beginning a search: Beginning a search Beginning at the main searching screen, you can choose to search only the media collection on the Pullman campus. The WSU Vancouver campus also has many films and other non-print materials. To include all the libraries, use the default of Entire Catalog.

Slide9: A patron in History 464 (Comparative Genocide) needs a video resource for a class assignment dealing with the Balkans. KW = videorecording genocide serbia No results are found, so we modify the search.


Slide10: Change the search to eliminate Serbia as a search term to find all videos and films owned by the media center on the wider topic of genocide. Nothing here looks interesting to the patron, so let’s modify the search again.


Slide11: This search yields three records. The display default is by the date of the item, with most recent listed first. Change the search to eliminate genocide as a search term to see all videos owned by the media center on the wider topic of Serbia.


Slide12: Of the entries found, the patron chooses a film from the correct time period. Have the patron note the call number so they can ask for it at the desk without having to search again. The catalog records have the keywords used in the search highlighted in red in the display. HINT: If the patrons sees a likely subject heading, they can click on the entry to see all materials in the media collection on that topic.


Request Item : Request Item If the patron wishes, they can use REQUEST ITEM to plan ahead for picking up the item at a library in the WSU system. They can also use the feature to place a hold on materials currently checked out. They will be in line to use the material when it is returned. The patron should allow time for the item to be pulled and sent to the other library, or they may go to Holland and Terrell Library to pick up the item directly.


Feature Films: Feature Films Feature films are motion pictures made for commerical release (theater, television, video store) Patrons may want something fun or entertaining to watch, or they may want the film for a Film Studies class.


Slide15: Choose KEYWORD search (limit to WSU Media if they want the film today) Use the keywords 'feature film*' (The asterisk allows the search to retrieve film, films, filming) Add any other keywords such as a specific director, actor, or word from the title Limit by language here if you want I want a dvd of one of the movies by the director Miyazaki.


Slide16: This search finds ten items in the Pullman media collection. It lists the entries in reverse date order, or we could have chosen alphabetical order. At this point, you cannot tell whether these are DVD or VHS items. Miyazaki movies


Slide17: Now to retrieve only DVD items, you can add the term ‘dvd’ to your keyword search. The term ‘vhs’ can also be added if the patron wants only VHS tapes.


Slide18: The new test GRIFFIN interface allows you to modify your search and place the term ‘dvd’ or ‘vhs’ in a subject field. This is a much more reliable interface for finding only one particular format of videorecording.

Slide23: Language Suggestions There are only a limited number of languages to choose from in the LIMIT menu. (Sorry – no Hindi) Many DVDs have multiple language tracks, so limiting to language can have some interesting results. (Did you know that HARRY POTTER is a Spanish language movie?)

Song Titles: Song Titles Begin a keyword search in WSU Media Use the words sound recording; then use a quotation symbol around the song title. Sound recording 'moon river' Items retrieved should have the words moon river adjacent to one another. It is possible to retrieve music by song titles. See what happens when you leave off the quotation marks.


Slide28: You retrieve fifteen records, with only four having the exact title 'Moon River.' How about Creedence Clearwater Revival singing 'Bad Moon Rising' and 'Green River?' or


Practice makes Perfect: Practice makes Perfect Not all keyword searches will yield the results you expect. Patrons sometimes don’t really know what the want. Spend time 'browsing' the collection with these search methods. Bib-Control has made it fairly easy to locate materials by adding genre headings like feature films and by including content notes.
