Types of Love: Sternberg:

Types of Love: Sternberg There are 3 components of love that result in a combination of 7 different types of love. See page 170 for a visual picture. Intimacy, Passion, Commitment: those are the three points of Sternberg’s triangle.

Types of Love: Sternberg:

Types of Love: Sternberg Intimacy alone is liking. This does not have to be sexual at all. This type of love can be between friends. Passion alone is infatuation. A physical and emotional attraction. This type is usually romantically inclined, although not always received the same way by the other person. Commitment alone is empty love. A feeling of staying just to stay.

Types of Love: Sternberg:

Types of Love: Sternberg Intimacy + Passion: romantic love. Often this is found in the beginning of relationships. How long this type of love is sustained can vary greatly. Intimacy + Commitment: companionate love. This may be between friends. The main feeling here is a depth to which most friendships do not achieve.

Types of Love: Sternberg:

Types of Love: Sternberg Passion + Commitment: fatuous love. Involves two people that have strong physical and emotional bonds and are committed. Monotonous ‘Friends with Benefits’ is an example of this type of love. Intimacy + Passion + Commitment: consummate love. The combination of all types of love into the traditional ideal view of love.

Sexuality:

Sexuality Cohabitation is when two people live together but are not married. This type of arrangement is on the increase and seems terribly odd to folks from previous generations. Some states have laws that if you cohabitate long enough that state will consider you married. DQ 7: Do you agree or disagree with cohabitation?

Marriage:

Marriage 'Contemporary marriage has been described as an institution that everyone on the outside wants to enter and everyone on the inside wants to leave.' Pre-marriage counseling is designed to ensure that both parties know what they are getting into. It is not a secret that the divorce rate in the U.S. is huge and this is thought to be one way to lower it. Folks rush into marriage w/o knowing their partner. DQ 8: What do you think of this quote? Is it true?

Relationship Reality:

Relationship Reality Traits for relationships differ depending on stage of relationships. Think back to Sternberg’s triangle, beginning relationships focus more on building intimacy and passion because there is not necessarily a commitment history. Once you are in a relationship you will have goods and bads and different types of love and activities will become the focus.

Marriage:

Marriage #1 predictor of a lasting marriage: difference between how you think your partner feels and how they actually feel. It does not matter if the relationship is going well or not. This statement is saying you must be in-tune to what your partner is thinking/feeling. The discrepancy is what causes problems. If you know your partner is unhappy you are going to try to fix it. If you don’t realize s/he is unhappy and you do nothing to change, s/he will remain unhappy and you will remain clueless.

Pre-marital Assessments:

Pre-marital Assessments Religious: many religions ask (force) prospective married couples to attend some form of event before being married. Meetings with married members of the congregation and workshops led by other members are two examples. Some churches’ stipulations are quite time consuming (weeks to months) and others are over in one weekend.

Pre-marital Assessments:

Pre-marital Assessments Questionnaires are often used to measure compatibility. These are largely the basis of online matchmaking companies. Before the net was ever-powerful, couples could get these types of questionnaires in hard copy from various companies. The idea has always been the same: will this be a good and successful marriage?

Pre-marital Assessments:

Pre-marital Assessments Discussion questions are most useful for folks that have not been together a long time. How many kids do you want? What is the monetary limit each person can spend without talking to the other? Where (geographically) do you want to live? These large life-altering questions can speak volumes about how successful a marriage will be. Couples that have been together for a long duration generally cover most of these questions on the way to marriage.

Marriage Statistics:

Marriage Statistics Older brides = improved chance of having a longer lasting marriage. AA couples are more likely to falter. AA couples less likely to remarry after a failed marriage. Being in this class will increase your chances of having a lasting marriage! Ok, kind of… having some college education is what does the trick. Average family in the U.S. is 3.16 people.

Marriage Statistics:

Marriage Statistics Blended families are when one or both parents bring children from a previous partner. 30% of all families in the U.S. fit this category. Juggler family is when there are two working parents OR a single parent that works. 70% of all families in the U.S. fit this category. American husbands currently put in 75% as much time as women on workday chores. That is a sharp increase from the 30% 1970. So men are doing more to help around the house but still less than women. 29% of American women out-earn their spouses; was 10% 1970.

Divorce Statistics:

Divorce Statistics Divorce rate is currently 3.7 / 1000 people. Improve your chances staying married: Combined income of $50,000. Marrying when you are at least 25 years old. Not having children w/in the first 7 months of marriage (note that means you weren’t pregnant at the time of marriage). Coming from in-tact traditional families. Having some shared religious affiliation.

Menstrual Cycle:

Menstrual Cycle Gonandotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). Ovum matures, ovulation (usually only 1) increase in estrogen. Endometrium thickens (progesterone). No conception… menstration. Conception… human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG).

Menstrual Cycle:

Menstrual Cycle Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS): NOT ONLY PSYCHOLOGICAL. Physical symptoms do occur. Amenorrhea is the cessation or lack of menstruation. Toxic Shock Syndrome can be a problem for some ladies. Increased risk if you are andlt; 30 and/or use tampons.

Sexuality:

Sexuality Initial sexual encounters at a younger age leads to a higher number of sexual partners over a lifetime. Sexually active individuals in high school: 54% 1990 to 47% 2000. The 15-24 year old age range accounts for 10 million of the 15 million STI cases in the U.S. Risky sexual behaviors are directly related to risky behaviors in life in general.

College Students:

College Students 33% have not had sex in the past year. 25% passed on an opportunity. That means they had the option to have sex and said 'No.' 75% of sexually active students discussed contraception before having sex. 1.2 partners per year is the average for college students in the U.S.

College Students:

College Students Perception vs. Reality: Women: actually had 1.3 partners in the last 12 months but were perceived to have had 3.7. Men: 1.8; 3.5. That is saying that other undergraduate students believe women have more sex than men and both genders have more sex than they really do. DQ 9: Do you agree or disagree with the numbers stated from this research?

Helpful Hints:

Helpful Hints Use protection. Please, use protection against unwanted pregnancies and STIs. 2/3 of all STI fall under our age group. That number is way too high and should be scary to you. Communicate with your partner before, during, and after. The less confusion that is involved will result in a better experience for both parties.

Helpful Hints:

Helpful Hints Be true to yourself. Know what you want or are willing to take part in and know that your feelings/desires are important and valid. Know your limits as a pair. Discuss what you are willing to take part in so the confusion and hurt feelings can be avoided as much as possible.
