Premium member Presentation Transcript Slide1: A Youth Group Initiative for Space Related Activities in Turkey September, 2000 UN/Austria/ ESA Symposium İncigül Polat Ayşegül ÖzbakırSlide2: Space technology and its applications are at initial stages in Turkey. After participating SGF, we were all excited about the recent developments in space activities. And, we have decided that in the near future, the young generation in Turkey could add lots of contribution to this endless research area. But, someone should start the first step. As an initial step, we founded an NGO organisation last year which is named as Space Research Working Group (SRWG). Why did we form SRWG ?Slide3: What kind of an organizational structure SRWG have? Basic principles of SRWG No vertical hierarchy in the group Equal responsibility Good understanding of each other Non-profitable Voluntary Interdisciplinary Open to everyone at all regional, national and international levels SRWG is the first one in Turkey with its mission, goals and principles. Slide4: Founders of SRWG We are total of 9 people, who are either Ph.D. or graduate students at different disciplines. Our Group Members: Tamer Özalp Ph.D (ESA, 1998) Geological Engineer Aziz Koru M.Sc (currently, METU) Physics İncigül Polat M.Sc (METU,1999) Environmental Engineer Özgür Gürtuna Ph.D (currently,Canada) Economist İlker Met Ph.D (currently, METU) Geological Eng. Orçun Mengenli M.Sc (currently, METU) Mining Engineer Ertan Yeşilnacar Ph.D (currently, METU) Geological Engineer Koray K. Yılmaz Ph.D (currently, METU) Geological Engineer Aysegül Özbakır M.Sc (currently,METU) City and Regional Planner * METU: Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey Slide5: To create a competent community in science and technology on space activities To increase the public awareness To encourage the young generation for their further education in space sciences To provide a platform to bring all people in Turkey who are interested in space or studying on Space Science and Technology (S&T). To provide usage of the space technologies for the benefits of the public. To force the decision makers and politicans to be more aware of the applications on Space S&T to make contribution to sustainable development Goals of SRWGSlide6: Creating opportunities for education, training, meeting and other space related events for SRWG to improve ourselves on Space S&T and its applications Collaborating with other space organisations such as agencies, companies and universities at national and international level Identifying the application areas of Space S&T and the existing resources to achieve a sustainable development on Space S&T in Turkey Creating own financial support by producing and applying the projects in Space S&T development and its applications especially on urgent needs of Turkey, such as Oil Spill Detection at Turkish Straits and Marmara Sea and to establish a disaster management system by using space technologies. Using financial resources to achieve our other goals. What are the ways to achieve these goals? Slide7: Lack of COMMUNICATION, COOPERATION and COORDINATION between organisations National Space policy for improving the social life by using Space S&T, National space organisation to coordinate the activities on space. Sufficient educational background on Space S&T Initial financial support for the projects related to Space S&T. What are the difficulties in Turkey that we might be faced?Slide8: However, we believe that we will be very successful in near feature. Since We have dreams for our future. SRWG is an interdisciplinary structure and young generation. Continuing to the education at all levels is the main objective of SRWG. And most important, there is a great enthusiasm among the young generation to study on Space S&T in Turkey. Slide9: We all believe that the future of the humanity will be related to the developments on the space and we all would like to achieve our goals in this area.
