Food culture tradition heritage history EXPERIENCES NatureWHY A HONEY ROAD?: WHY A HONEY ROAD? We are putting the world’s very first honey tasting heritage route on the map…and Turkey, with the highest concentration of bee-boxes per square kilometer is the perfect place to start. Most regional development projects focus on animal husbandry, but too much leads to overgrazing and is bad for the environment. And unlike wine tasting and mono-crops like vineyards, - honey is both perfectly environmental and family friendly. Honey is a historic local product, with the world’s oldest honey traced back to this region. Organic honey requires pristine environments and local stability – ideal for village women. Honey tasting emphasizes quality over quantity, shifting Turkey’s honey status quo. Honey tasting (versus just selling honey) brings investment and cultural exchange into remote rural villages.WHERE DOES IT GO?: WHERE DOES IT GO? Balyolu works in some of the most remote, beautiful, pristine, and “under-developed” regions of Turkey: Ardahan, Kars, and Şavşat. Turkey is the 7 th top tourism destination in the World … But nearly ALL of this $18 billion tourism revenue goes to the west coast . For 8 months out of the year, Turkey’s Northeast is severely cold, leading to limited regional investment, development, construction, or progress . However, Balyolu is about to change this paradigm of poverty into a A Honey T asting Paradise . ARDAHAN ŞAVŞAT As a result, this is Turkey’s most difficult region to live in.WHO IS BALYOLU?: WHO IS BALYOLU?
