The anise species that answer the beverage industry needs have a narrow range, usually occurring in the borders between Vietnam, China, and Northern Laos. This is an area of 5,000 km2, of which 3/5 is Vietnam.The Badiane for export is available whole, or ground to a red-brown powder. International Badiane trade is dominated by supplies from China and Vietnam which offers two grades, ‘whole’ and ‘broken’. Vietnam sells most of its Top quality star anise to China, once blended it is exported to world markets.

World’s trade in anise is around 3000 tons of Badiane fruits.- 2,000-2,200 tons of fruits are needed to yield 100 tons of anise oil.- 100 kg of dried Star anise fruit can yield 8.5 kg of essential oil. - 80 % of Badiane essential oil content is Anethol European countries that purchase Star anise essential oils & plants from Vietnam & China, re-export after transformation.70% of Badiane is imported by the EU member states in 2007 Among these 200 - 250 tonnes of Star Anise are shipped to France Anethol is then used in France, Greece & Italy mostly for the production of alcoholic beverages such as Absinthe, Pastis, Ouzo and Sambucca.
