Common Traditions Trick-or-Treat Bobbing for Apples Dressing in Costumes

Trick-or-Treat: 

Trick-or-Treat European custom called “souling” Christians would beg for soul cakes Families would give soul cakes in return for a promise to pray for the family’s relatives Eventually children adopted the tradition and started given food, candy, money, etc.

Bobbing for Apples: 

Bobbing for Apples The Celts were absorbed by the Roman Empire, many rituals of Roman origin began Worship of Pomona Apples were served as the fruit of Pomona Many games of divination involving them entered the Samhain customs

Dressing in Costumes: 

Dressing in Costumes Originated w/ European and Celtics Food ran low in the winter, people were afraid of the dark On Halloween people thought ghosts were outside their homes To avoid being recognized they dressed in masks and disguises
