Definition: :

Definition: Endometritis is the inflammation of the lining mucosa of the uterus. Endometritis has a profound effect upon the fertility of an animal.

Causes::

Causes: Actinomyces pyogenes. Fusobacterium necrophorum. Streptoccoci. Staphylococci. Brucella abortus. Tritrichomonas fetus. Escherichia coli.

Predisposing factors::

Predisposing factors: Dystocia Retain placenta. Twin birth and induction of pregnancy. Return of cyclical ovarian activity. Milk yield. Metabolic diseases. Milk fever.

Clinial finding : :

Clinial finding : Fever 100-104 ° F. Abnormal vaginal bleeding . White or whitish yellow mucopurulent vaginal discharge . Affected animal exihibit shortened or prolonged estrus cycle.

Diagnosis :

Diagnosis Inspection of the perineum, examination of the tail for evidence of vaginal discharge. Manual or speculum examination of the vagina . Slightly enlarged reproductive tracts or slightly abnormal discharge at 30 days post partum. Following tests may be performed: - Endometrial biopsy - ESR - WBC Rectal palpation -Doughy feel uterus.

Differential Diagnosis:

Differential Diagnosis Pyometra Uterine tumor

Treatment :

Treatment Anti- microbial therapy Procaine penicillin –G can be used for systemic therapy @ 22000 iu/kg at 12 hours interval during the early post- partum period. Sodium penicillin –G is useful for intrauterine infusion @ 10 million units in the post – ovulatory period . Hormonal therapy Prostaglandin F2 α

Prevention and control :

Prevention and control Endometritis caused by sexually transmitted infections can be prevented by- Early Diagnosis and complete treatment of sexually transmitted diseased .
