Accent Rules :19 Accent Rules First, determine what syllable gets the accent, then which accent it gets. Verb accents are recessive; noun accents are persistent. The acute accent is the default. Long ultima – circumflex can’t be elsewhere; short ultima – long accented penult gets circumflex.
