Xiqin Guildhall Dialogue 1 : Xiqin Guildhall Dialogue 1 (A=Li Ping, B=Wang Ping) Li Ping is the native and Wang Ping is his friend who has just arrived at Zigong. They are standing in front of the Xiqin Guildhall and talking about its unique architecture. B:Mr. Li, I heard that the Zigong Salt History Museum is regarded as one of the seven distinctive museums in China by UNESCO. Is there something special about it? A: Yes, it presents the salt culture and ancient Chinese architecture. The museum was founded in 1959 and has two ancient buildings: Xiqin Guildhall and the Wangye Temple. The former was approved as a China Key Cultural Relic Unit under Protection in 1988 and the latter was ratified as a Sichuan Provincial Key Cultural Relic Unit under protection in 1991. B: Why is the museum also called Xiqin Guildhall? A: The complex was built by the salt merchants from Shaanxi during Emperor Qianlong’s reign of the Qing Dynasty. The businessmen would like to get together here, so it got its name Xiqin Guildhall. Now it is turned into a salt theme museum. B: I’ve been to the Imperial Palace Museum and Suzhou gardens. I thinks building is quite different and peculiar in design. It embodies both the Chinese royal and folk architectural styles. A: You’re right. Look at that hill! It is the Longfeng Hill (Dragon Phoenix Hill). The guildhall is backed by the hill. Along its 80-meter centerline, you can see Wushenggong Gateway (Gateway of the Martial Saint Temple), Xianjilou Tower (Tower of Performing Arts), Tianjie Street (Heavenly Street) and so on. B: I also see some beautiful pavilions standing on both sides of the centerline. What are they? A: The layout you see is typical of traditional Chinese architecture. The axis of the guildhall is flanked on both sides by the Jinyong Pavilion (Golden Clock Pavilion) and Bengu Pavilion (Drum Beating Pavilion), Immortal Kitchen, etc. All of them are encircled by a wall and joined by corridors. The guildhall is a masterpiece of ancient Chinese architecture where the salt history of China is represented. B: What a magnificent building! I’d like to take photos here. A: All right! (to be continued)

Exercises of Xiqin Guildhall Dialogue 1 : Listen To Dialogue 1 And Decide Whether The Statements After The Dialogue Are True(T) Or False(F) 1. _________ Xiqin Guildhall was also called Shaanxi Temple for it was a place where the salt merchants from Shaanxi got together. 2. _________ Xiqin Guildhall has been already turned into a salt theme gardens. 3. _________It is typical of folk architectural style just like Suzhou gardens. 4. _________The layout of Xiqin guildhall represents the traditional Chinese architecture. 5. _________The centerline of Xinqin Guildhall is flanked by some buildings which are the most important architectures. Exercises of Xiqin Guildhall Dialogue 1 KEYS

Slide10 : Li Ping and Wang Ping enter the Wushenggong Gateway. Li Ping introduces to Wang Ping the objects of the salt refinery history in Zigong. A: Follow me please! Now, let’s get into the Wushenggong Gateway! The Gateway is the entrance to the Xiqin Guildhall. It is famous for its saddle roof, which has four layers of eaves with one upon another. B:I see the three layers of the roof stretch out like beetle’s feelers in perfect harmony with the roof of Tower of Performing Arts. A: A masterpiece of the classic Chinese building, isn’t it? Look! The Wushenggong and the Tower of Performing Arts are supported by a framework which is composed of 22 round stone pillars, numerous beams and planks. Now, let’s get inside and visit the objects of the salt refinery history! B: Ok, after you! A:. Please look at these articles in the showcase! They are the tools and equipment used in well drilling, extracting bittern, and salt refining. B: I see, Mr. Li, what’s the equipment? It looks like a crane! A: It is the model of a Tianche. People took advantage of the equipment and other tools to successfully drill the Shenhai Well in 1835. It was the first well deeper than 1,000 meters in the world. The Tianche presents the superb technique of well drilling in ancient China. B: I’m still confused. Would you please explain it in more detail? A: Tianche, literally means a “chariot in the heaven”. It reaches far into the sky and looks like a chariot for deities. But it is actually a wooden derrick standing over a salt well. B: Wow, I think it is a very complicated machine. I’d like to see the original one at site if you don’t mind. A: Why not? There are more than 13,000 Tianche over the past two thousand years. However, many of them were pulled down because of high maintenance cost. Today, only few are still kepta for the sake of sightseeing. You may see a Tianche at the site of the world-famous Shenhai Well. Shall we go? B: OK. (the end) Xiqin Guildhall Dialogue 2

Slide13 : Shunan Bamboo Theme Park Ladies and Gentlemen! Now we have arrived at the west gate of our destination, the Shunan Bamboo Forest. Please take your valuables and get down the coach one by one! Let’s begin our journey of exploring the beautiful bamboo scenery! First of all, I’d like to tell you our travel schedule today. The first scenic spot we’ll see is the elegant Carefree Valley, and then we’ll walk along the most extraordinary bamboo corridor in the world---- the Jade Corridor. After that, we’ll visit Xianyu Cave and Tianbao Village. Last but not the least, we’ll enjoy two elegant lakes ---the Dragon Pool and the Qinglong Lake. At about 5:30 pm, we’ll get together at the east gate of the scenic site. Please remember our coach number: AT-0251. Our driver, Mr. Dou will be waiting for us there. Look around here, please! What have you seen? A boundless forest of the bamboo! Here you can find 58 species of bamboo trees, such as flower bamboo, fovea bamboo, abacus bamboo, cotton bamboo, Xiangfei bamboo, etc. Besides, there are a lot of precious animals: bamboo monkey, bamboo frog, xylophone frog, just to mention a few. Would you please follow me into the gate? In front of us you’ve probably seen two giant Chinese characters “Zhu Hai” (Bamboo Forest). The calligraphy was inscribed with elegant and dynamic strokes by the famous general, Zhang Aiping. When Huang Tingjian, a great poet of the Northern Song Dynasty saw this magnificent scenery, he exclaimed with delight: “Marvelous! This beautiful scenery of bamboo can rival that of Mt. Emei.” The bamboos here have been molded into various fascinating shapes by Nature for thousands of years. Everybody! The nest scenic site is the Xianyu Cave. Before we get there, we’ll walk through a long green corridor. You see, the bamboo trees on both sides of the path lean toward the center and shelter the red-sand road from the sunshine. The cool air and the shade of the bamboo create a feeling that you were walking through a jade tunnel with a red carpet. This is the world-famous scenic site—Jade Corridor. The sun is shinning. Did you see the sunshine penetrating the bamboo and splashing many golden spots on the road? The Jade corridor turns out to be a colorful corridor and a beautiful gallery! Now, we are walking towards the Xianyu Cave. This is a most wonderful place to appreciate a world of bamboo. Not far from Xianyu Cave, there is another scenic site called Tianbao Village. When you walk along the plank road, you’ll feel as if you were walking in the air. But don’t worry about it. You can put your hands on the rails. The most beautiful scenery always lies on the precipitous peaks! Shall we go? Shunan Bamboo Theme Park

Part IV TOURISM AND TRAVEL : Part IV TOURISM AND TRAVEL BOOKING ONLINE . Almost three-quarters of US business travelers use the Internet as their primary means of arranging their business travel, according to the results of a survey released(发布) today. The survey in the United States found that 71 percent book their business travel primarily online (在线), a trend that has been increasing in the recent three years. Time is witnessing a rapid uptake (兴起) of technology use among business travelers. Since travelers clearly expect to use IT, travel and hospitality leaders are focusing on using these electronic channels as a means of enhancing (提高)both customer service and their bottom line. READING: Hong Kong Disneyland : READING: Hong Kong Disneyland Once the guest enters the theme park and resort, the plants, trees and flowers are conjuring up a sense of being in unique environments. Specific plant materials are cast to “play roles” as characters in the story creating realistic and magical settings. At Main Street USA, which evokes a by-gone era at the turn of the 19th century, the plants are utilized to create a playfully colorful and nostalgic landscape. Adventureland brings guests to the exotic reaches of the world where a tropical jungle dominates the theme. In Fantasyland, soft, fine textured plants with small leaves and manicured hedges are used. The character meet-and-area, which is unique to Hong Kong Disneyland, will feature Disney topiaries in the shape of the much-beloved characters such as hippos from Fantasia, Dumbo, and Mickey Mouse. Voyage into the future and out-of-this-world! High-tech travel is the name of the game in Tomorrowland where submarines and starships take you from ocean depths to outer space, and the Disneyland monorail carries you through a streamlined landscape. It will transport you to some of the most beautiful places on earth, or travel to distant away. There’s also the Submarine Voyage, Tomorrowland, the Starcade, and more.

Exercises of READING: Hong kong Disneyland : Read the passage aloud, and work in group of two or three students to have a topic discussion. What is the culture of Hong Kong Disneyland? Why is Disneyland popular all over the world? What can we learn from the operations of Hong Kong Disneyland? Study the Text “Hong Kong Disneyland” Make an Outline about the Speech Role-Playing:Introduce What “Hong Kong Disneyland” to the Tourists Exercises of READING: Hong kong Disneyland

ROLE PLAY : ROLE PLAY A group of Chinese tourists visit Hong Kong Disneyland. They are walking along Main Street USA. The landscape of the street is quite different from what they learn in the English Textbooks. So they ask the teacher to explain the American geography and culture in 19th century.

Writing: Tourism Publicity : Tourism publicity is quite simple to understand; it is intended to spread ideas or information which will persuade or convince people to purchase a product. It aims to gain tourism profits by informing people about scenic attractions, making them become interested in them and convincing them to visit there and spend their hard earned money there. There are many ways to publicize tourism. Media publicity includes making documentary and TV commercials, publishing advertisements in magazines or newspapers. China International Travel Mart provides excellent opportunities for provinces or regions to introduce their tourist highlights to tourists both at home and abroad. Tourism publicity is critical to the survival of the tourism industry. We must realize this and make it the primary principle of operation, and carry it out in daily practice. Here is a sample of tourism publicity for you to follow. Writing: Tourism Publicity

Writing: Tourism Publicity : The language in the speech should be clear, polite and interesting. The speech should express appreciation for their presence of the visitors on the occasion and be relevant to the cultural background of the listeners or tourists. Writing: Tourism Publicity
