■Traditional Craft Objects in Tohoku 162 【東北の伝統工芸品】 Tsuguru black varnish is the traditional lacquer ware of the far North. Its material is Japanese Cypress wood on which cloth is pasted and then repeatedly lacquered and polished. There are four techniques for finishing the items, such as "nanako nuri", which creates a pattern similar to kimono material, and "monsha nuri", which achieves a frosted, contemporary look. Bowls, chopsticks and tiered boxes are among the goods made. Potters of Ryumon ware do not draw patterns or designs on their work; instead, they drip a glaze of natural iron, copper, ash from straw and chaff on their pottery before placing it in the kiln.
