Preface:

Preface The first phase of Venture 2006 has produced imaginative and innovative business ideas from 205 teams from across Switzerland. If this great interest in the Venture business plan competition reflects the innovation potential in Switzerland as a whole, then the potential is truly formidable. We are pleased to present the 35 finalists and, in particular, the prize winners in this brochure. The members of the Jury Committee, who closely examined all the business ideas, did not have an easy task selecting the winners. As you look through the brochure, you will see for yourself the wealth of ideas submitted. The ten prize-winning teams not only had bright ideas – but ideas that also passed the jury’s critical scrutiny of their customer benefits, market potential and revenue mechanisms. We congratulate the winning teams and wish them every success in developing their business ideas. A good idea alone, however, doesn’t make a successful entrepreneur. What is now needed are detailed business plans, motivation and perseverance. Naturally, a little bit of luck also helps! A broad range of support will also significantly contribute to success. Therefore, we encourage all teams, winners or not, to participate in the second phase of the competition – along with any new teams that want to join the Venture adventure! Venture 2006 will provide you with personal coaching, informative presentations and jury feedback – all in all, giving valuable insights on how to prepare a successful business plan. We thank our numerous coaches and jurors for their commitment and many hours of voluntary work. We also thank the members of the Advisory Board, without whose contribution Venture 2006 would not have been possible. Dr. Thomas Knecht Director McKinsey & Company Switzerland Prof. Dr. Ernst Hafen President ETH Zurich

Slide10:

Rico Chandra (Team leader) Giovanna Davatz Industry: Transportation Place: Geneva, Zurich Originating from: ETH Zurich Arktis Radiation Detectors Team Background Winners

Slide11:

Appraisal Arktis' business idea is exciting and, from a technical point of view, most likely implementable. The solution could be a breakthrough. The overall market is of an interesting size with considerable potential. Description Radiation portal monitoring – the screening of cargo to detect concealed dangerous radioactive materials – has become standard practice wherever trucks, trains or ships deliver their cargo. Steel mills, incinerator plants, landfills, seaports, and border crossings are but a few examples that rely on portal monitoring to prevent nuclear smuggling/proliferation or to avoid environmental damage. Current technology has many shortcomings. Most notably, the all too frequent “false positives”, i.e., so-called nuisance alarms, disrupt the automated flow of goods and cause delays. Arktis proposes a new detector technology. Developed and proven in particle astrophysics research, our technology is aimed at reducing the false alarm rate by a factor of ten, while increasing the sensitivity to dangerous radioactive materials. This allows for cost savings and more reliable detection of dangerous goods.

Winners:

CEMOPTxD Chidambaram Narayanan (Team leader) Pramod Prasanth Industry: Construction/real estate Place: Zurich Originating from: non-academia Background Team Winners

Slide13:

The cement industry is under increasing pressure to build plants that are less harmful to the environment. Players are becoming more environment friendly with increased budgets to this end. Large customers, in particular, will embrace the latest technologies. CEMOPTxD’s technology differentiates itself from comparable products in that inhouse users do not need to be simulation specialists. Appraisal Description CEMOPTxD is a specialized simulation tool for design and optimization of cement kilns, with 1-, 2- and full 3-dimen-sional (xD) simulation capability. It is based on first principles modeling of kiln combustion processes, including species, momentum, heat balances, and combustion. Simulations can predict key quantities in clinker production such as free lime content, concentration of emissions, temperature variation in the kiln, etc., for given design parameters such as type of fuel, kiln geometry, etc. Cement production is highly energy intensive. Given the high growth predicted for the industry globally, a constant drive towards increasing energy efficiency in production, combined with a solid strategy for minimum environmental impact is required. CEMOPTxD will strongly impact the design of next generation kilns that are more energy efficient and environment friendly.

Winners:

Winners Covagen Dr. Julian Bertschinger (Team leader) Dragan Grabulovski Industry: Pharmaceuticals/biotechnology Place: Zurich Originating from: ETH Zurich Background Team

Slide15:

Winners FunZyme BioTechnologies S.A. Dr. Reto Stöcklin (Team leader) Dr. Philippe Bulet Yves Duchemin Prof. Robin Offord Prof. Keith Rose Industry: Pharmaceuticals/biotechnology Place: Geneva Originating from: non-academia Background Team

Slide19:

The team presents an excellent concept, thoroughly based on the broad pharma expertise of the founder and allied parties. The market potential for Celiac disease seems large enough, the proposed use in Celiac disease is very convincing. Also, potential applications of enzyme-based drugs for other markets exist. Appraisal Description FunZyme BioTechnologies will develop and commercialize new enzyme-based drugs and agents for some important applications in health care and biotechnology. It will do so by exploiting potent enzymes isolated from fungi that have the property to cleave any protein from its extremities resulting in the release of single amino acids. The use of these enzymes – either alone or in combination – has many promising industrial applications ranging from highly specific and controlled partial modification of a protein’s extremities to the complete degradation of large and resistant proteins down to single amino acids. FunZyme will develop a first drug for Celiac disease, original keratinolytic formulations, prion decontamination, waste recycling and tools to facilitate protein production.

Winners:

Winners GEPETO Dr. Olivier Jaquet (Team leader) Nicolas Hubschwerlen Dr. Rabah Namar Dr. Pascal Siegel Industry: Software Place: Zurich, Basel Originating from: ETH Zurich Background Team

Slide21:

GEPETO presents an interesting approach in the area of geo-modelling. The idea of breaking a duopoly using an open source solution is good. Thanks to the rising cost of petrol and, as a consequence, its exploration, the market is growing. It offers an interesting revenue potential. Appraisal Description GEPETO (GEomodeller for PETroleum Open source) is a new software framework for the 3D modelling of geological structures and their physical properties. The main application field will be the petroleum industry. The GEPETO framework will be developed under an open source concept. It is designed to facilitate the development and the integration of third-party tools (open or commercial plug-ins). Through collaboration and by taking advantage of this open source technology, the users will boost the level of innovation in the market of geo-modelling tools. This concept also makes the software technology accessible to the academic and environmental worlds. The GEPETO team will develop and manage the software framework. The development will be sponsored by a consortium of petroleum companies. Additional income will arise from maintenance tasks and specific developments based on the open source framework.

Winners:

Winners HyBiom Dr. Rainer Warth (Team leader) Benjamin Fumey Prof. Andreas Züttel Industry: Energy Place: Rolle Originating from: University of Fribourg Background Team

Slide23:

Appraisal Description The business idea seems to make good sense as hydrogen is becoming more important and, hence, storage issues are arising. The team already has a product that works. It is an early-stage but interesting project, which could become a good business. Several market segments could be very attractive, depending on price and ease of charging, as well as storage capacity and density. HyBiom provides its customers with customizable units to store hydrogen in a solid form. In our units we use modern metal-hydrides, which can absorb and release hydrogen in a controlled manner. This hydrogen can then be used in traditional combustion engines. Alternatively, the hydrogen can power fuel cells, which provide electric energy. In both applications, hydrogen is a pollution-free energy source yielding pure water as an end product. The HyBiom hydrogen storage units will find applications in solar energy production; grid-free energy supply, and mobile applications. We think our units support the development of decentralized energy production and storage. This will allow our customers to regain control of their future energy costs and develop a sustainable, CO2-free energy policy.

Winners:

Winners Qualimetro S.A. Stéphane Dewarrat (Team leader) Florian Glardon Marc Müller Industry: Mech. engineering/automotive Place: Yverdon-les-Bains Originating from: EPF Lausanne Background Team

Slide29:

Appraisal Description Qualimetro offers a convincing idea, fully in the trend of precision instruments: portable, low weight and precise. The team outlines its clear and promising differentiation from the competition. Basically, there is a large market, perhaps with limited growth. Being the best among few in a market worth several hundred million euros makes for an attractive proposition.
