National Coastal Statistics Between 1980-2003 the coastal population increased by 33 million 23 of the 25 most densely populated areas are on the coast 47% of national economy attributed to coastal counties

Marine Transportation Trends : 

Marine Transportation Trends 95% foreign trade through US Ports Contributes $1 Trillion annually to US Economy Volume expected to double by 2020 Regional trends: - short sea shipping - cruise ships - energy demands

Coastal Zone Management Act (CZMA) Passed in 1972, in response to growing coastal pressures and national interest in managing competing demands for use & protection of coastal areas Created federal/state Coastal Zone partnership
