What is R?:
What is R? “[Response to Intervention] is a process that utilizes all resources within a school and district in a collaborative manner to create a single, well-integrated system of instruction and interventions informed by student outcome data.” Jack O’ Connell California State Superintendent of Education
Intervention Approach:
Intervention Approach It is an early intervention practice that hopefully will intervene before they have “failed ”. It will also ensure that placing the student in Special Education is a guaranteed last case scenario.
Key Components of RTI According to the California Department of Education:
Key Components of RTI According to the California Department of Education High quality classroom instruction Standard based, in class room instruction Research-based instruction Shown to be effective through scientific research Universal screening Tri-annual assessment of core curriculum on all students. Students performance grade level on these “Benchmark” tests are considered for in classroom intervention. Continuous classroom progress monitoring This can be teacher observations, publisher tests, analysis of student work samples and teacher-developed quizzes Research-based intervention This is used when a student is not meeting at level achievement Progress monitoring during instruction and intervention We track the students progress to see how the intervention is working and adjusting according to what the Progress monitoring suggests Fidelity of program implementation The reliability of the RTI process requires commitment and structure. Staff development and collaboration RTI requires that people work together as a team to implement, develop and monitor the intervention process. Parent involvement Parents are involved, informed and give input in every level of intervention and decision making process. Specific Learning Disability Determination The RTI process allows for every option of intervention to be implemented and monitored before determining eligibility Source: CA Department of Education : http://www.cde.ca.gov/nr/el/le/yr08ltr1114att.asp
RTI Model:
RTI Model Tier 3 “ Intensive” or “Individual” Tier. Tier 2: “Strategic” or “Target” Tier 2 only the students, about 15%, who are not making adequate progress with Tier 1 instruction, are given more support in the form of short-term, research-based interventions Tier 1:Benchmark” or “School-Wide” tier All students receive standards-based, high quality core instruction in the general education classroom. The teacher supports all the students and approximately 80% of students are successful with Tier 1 alone * 95% of students are successful at tier 1 and 2 *5% of students require further individualized instruction with long term intensive intervention With RTI we are able to provide students with Interventions before they are referred to services
Benefits of RTI:
Benefits of RTI Early intervention who are struggling with core curriculum realistic instructional pace and goals for struggling students progressively more intense levels of instructional interventions Enhanced understanding by people involved by the data used and collected in the intervention Accurate measures of identifying at risk students Instructional decisions guided by research based intervention and progress monitoring data Reduction of misdiagnosed minority student in special education Collaboration and research based intervention
