Andrew Charlton has made contributions to the fields of literature, politics and economics throughout his career. A former senior economic advisor within Kevin Rudd’s cabinet, as well as a Doctor of Economics and former student at both Oxford University and the University of Sydney, Charlton is responsible for the production of two economics-related essays: Man-Made World: Choosing Between Progress and Planet, and Dragon’s Tail: The Lucky Country after the China Boom. Andrew Charlton : Economic Advisor

Slide3:

Man-Made World, also known as Quarterly Essay 44, explores the ongoing debate and rift between both environmentalists and economists regarding solutions to long-held global problems, such as scarcity of food, overpopulation and climate change. This essay also provides an evaluation of proposed solutions to these problems, such as organic and genetically modified foods and the use of nuclear energy vs. other alternative energy solutions. The main crux of Quarterly Essay 44, at least according to Andrew Charlton , is the need for leaders to develop comprehensive solutions that will allow for a brighter, healthier future for all future generations.

Dragon’s Tail, Andrew Charlton’s other essay of note, takes a look at China’s recent and considerable economic growth, as well as Australia’s past, present and future role the economic health and prosperity throughout the region. This essay examines the challenging transition China is facing during this recent economic boom, as well as the many consequences this boom has had, and will have, for the country of Australia and its economy.
