Teaser Trailers Research :

Teaser Trailers Research By Amar Bram

INCEPTION :

INCEPTION From watching the ‘Inception’ teaser trailer I have learnt a lot already. I instantly recognized the close-ups of the spinner. As a result this makes the viewer realize that this object is going to be significant in the film. As a result this entices the audience to watch as they are interested. As a result by the use of a close up in this teaser trailer it entices the viewer to watch the full film, which is the aim of the teaser trailer. There was also close-ups on the facial expressions, as in the ‘Inception’ trailer these are faces of suspense, this entices people to watch the actual film as they what to know what is making the actors shocked, therefore this entices the audience to watch the whole film. In addition there is also a camera pan, this happens at the end and then the camera zooms out and the viewer sees a Birdseye view of a lot of buildings that spells out ‘Inception’ in a mazy font. As it is in a maze font and as a maze is confusing it signifies to the audience that the film will also be mind bewildering and confusing. Also mise en scene is used throughout, mise en scene examples include guns and suits. As a result this gives a sense of realism, which is what is suspected in a big budget film. However this also makes the film look and feel more realistic to the audience and therefore makes the trailer more effective. As a result this tells me that in the teaser trailer that I create I have to make sure that mise en scene is used throughout. In addition at the end the teaser trailer shows the date of release, the institution and the website. As a result from all of the teaser trailers I have seen I have seen the same thing, as a result I have to make sure the trailer that I create looks realistic and therefore I have to add these three pieces of information at the end of the teaser trailer. Also I noticed that in the teaser trailer there are also a lot of rapid movements of the camera and a lot of cuts. This is deliberately done to make the trailer look more eventful, exciting and enticing to watch. As the aim of the teaser trailer is to entice people to watch the full film by doing this it makes the trailer fit for purpose. As a result the teaser trailer that I create must also include a lot of cuts and quick camera movements. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DwuVKfjctk

Slide 3:

Aswell as creating a teaser trailer I also have to create two ancillary texts. These are a website for the future film and a poster. As a result I have analysed the ‘Inception’ website and poster which can be scene on the left of the slide. From the website I can see that it is extremely coherent. This is because from the teaser trailer and poster the same shade of blues are used as well as the font and font colour. As a result this makes the films website look a lot more effective as the person viewing it feels more involved into the film as everything is consistent. As a result this has shown me the importance in making sure that the website that I create is logical throughout in every possible way. In addition I also noticed that at the top of the website there are also reviews. I think that this is a very effective form to engage the audience into the film, this is because most film watchers like to read the reviews of the film to find out what the film is like and if it is worth watching. As a result as the reviews are very good this entices people to watch the film and therefore this has shown me that a simple thing like this can increase the amount of people that watch the film and therefore I will make sure that the website that I create will include this. Another aspect that I noticed was that the website had a page that told the users to click hear to enter site. I think that this good as that page includes a very interesting image and therefore this is a great way to involve the website viewers to the film. As a result I think that the website that I create will have to include an image that is very interesting, however it must also be coherent. As well as the website I also analysed the ‘Inception’ poster. The first thing that I noticed was that it was coherent with the website and the teaser trailer. This is because the title of the film is in the same font and font colour and the colours used are dark and de-saturated. As a result this has shown me the necessity and importance in making sure that the ancillary texts that I create are also coherent. Also the rule of thirds is used in the poster, as a result this makes the poster very simple but effective. Therefore the poster does not overload the viewer too much as this would draw the reader away. This has shown me now the importance and some techniques that I need to use to create a poster that is fit for purpose and as effective as possible.

2012 :

2012 Instantly from the first time I saw this teaser trailer I saw that in the ‘2012’ teaser trailer there is a narration of the story throughout. As a result this helps the viewers understand a little bit about the plot of the film, however not too much of the film, so it still creates a sense of uncertainty to the viewer. As a result this entices people to watch the film when it arrives in cinema. Also in the teaser trailer a lot of popular and worldwide locations are emphasised. This gives the viewers a sense of the size of the film and therefore this has shown me location in a teaser trailer adds a different dimension to teaser trailer. In addition there is a variety of camera shots, these include close-ups (facial expressions), extreme close-ups, establishing wide shots (locations) and many more. As a result as there is a variety this this makes the viewer in an unfamiliar predicament, which is what I am trying to create in the teaser trailer that I create. Also the teaser trailer is dark, has low key lighting and has de-saturated colours. This is done to add ambiguity to the trailer and less clarity, as a result this would make the viewers curious about the film. Finally like the ‘Inception’ trailer there also is the name of the institutions, the website name and the date of release at the end of the teaser trailer. This is the key information that is needed so the viewers have the chance to find out more and therefore I will make sure that there is information about the ancillary texts that I will make at the end of the teaser trailer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFP5PeExtVs

Slide 5:

From the ‘2012’ website I have learnt a lot of important information. Firstly I saw that the website was coherent with the teaser trailer of ‘2012’. This is because the wallpaper of the website is of a city being flooded and as this is what happens in the teaser trailer it makes the website and teaser trailer consistent. Another aspect that I noticed about the website was how there was a chance for people to download an iPhone app. As this is an up and coming form of advertisement as a lot of people are buying iPhones then this form of media will definitely promote the movie and have a wider audience. Also a heading on the website was ‘About the film’ this obviously outlined the plot of the film. As a result if a person went on the website by chance then if they read this page and liked the plot then they may want to watch the film. As the aim of the website is to promote the film then by increasing the viewers of the film means that the website is doings it job. Also the poster for ‘2012’ is coherent with the teaser trailer and the website as the same colour scheme is used and the same image is used. This has shown me the importance of making all of the ancillary texts that I create coherent. Finally at the bottom of the ‘2012’ poster there is a caption line, ‘We were warned,’ as a result this slogan makes the poster a lot easier to remember which is what the aim of the poster is. As a result I will make sure that I will include a slogan.

Toy Story 3 :

Toy Story 3 In addition in this teaser trailer, which has the genre of comedy, I can see that vibrant colours are used. All of the colours are bright, highly saturated and have high contrast. As the target audience of this film is children and as the main way to attract there attention and entice them to watch the trailer is to use bright colours I think that this makes the trailer a lot more effective and fit for purpose. Also in the trailer there is an emphasis on the main and well known characters, these include Woody, Mr Potato and Buzz Lightyear. As these people are liked and known by most children as soon as they see the trailer they will want to watch on. As a result when they realise that there is a film coming out they will want to watch it as they have been drawn in. Aswell as the well know characters, Lego is used, as most children have Lego they have something to relate to and therefore this will also be another technique to draw people to watch the teaser trailer to the end. As a result I have learnt that using popular objects is a fantastic form to attract your target audience. Furthermore humour is used also to entice people to watch the film, especially as it is a comedy, as a result as everybody likes the comedy genre and as the teaser trailer includes comedy (Woody and the pogo stick), this entices people to continue to watch on and hopefully watch the full film when it is in cinemas. Also the most notable camera shot is that of the long take, the first cut is after 57 seconds, however as this is a comedy and not a film that is going to be an epic or full of action I think that the long take befits the film as it allows the viewer to concentrate on the actions instead of the camera shots. Finally just like all of the other teaser trailers I have seen there is the usually institutions name, release date and website name. However also the teaser trailer emphasises the 3D that the film is being shown in, and as a result this is another selling point. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5f-MYl-HzNw

Slide 7:

The first thing that I noticed about the ‘Toy Story 3’ website was that the homepage included ratings of the film. An example was ‘The all-time greatest animation – Mojo.’ As a result this is a very effective way to entice people to watch the film because as the ratings are high this will make others want to watch the film. As a result by showing the ratings on the homepage this will increase the viewers of the film. Also as the target audience for the film is children there is a heading that allows people to play games and conduct themselves in other activities. As a result this means that children can stay on the website a lot longer than any other website. As a result this will increase the chances of the children watching the film as they will be regularly visiting the website and hopefully liking the website. In addition the colours in the website are bright and vibrant. As the target audience is children and they like vibrant colours by the website including vibrant colours there is a greater chance that the children will be attracted to the website. As a result this will most likely increase the viewers of the website and hopefully the film. As a result this has shown me the colour scheme of the film has to match the genre and target audience. The poster for ‘Toy Story 3’ is coherent with the teaser trailer and the website. This is because the colours scheme for all three sources are the same. As a result this makes the ‘Toy Story’ promotion more consistent and therefore likeable. This has shown me that the poster that I create is coherent with the other two sources. Also the poster includes a slogan, ‘The toys are back in town,’ as a result this makes the poster a lot more easier to remember and also as it is a famous and popular slogan it is easier for people to remember. As a result this has shown me that a slogan is a great way to increase the amount of viewers that watch the film in full.

The Last Airbender :

The Last Airbender Firstly from ‘The Last Airbender’ teaser trailer I have learnt a lot of new aspects that will help me in the future. I saw how effective a long shot can be and the sense of amazement this shot can make the audience feel. This is particularly done in this teaser trailer when the child is doing his martial art techniques. However aswell as this we can see lighted candles around him and therefore the long shot creates a sense of nervousness to the audience as they are uncertain about what is occurring in the scene. As a result I have learnt that this camera shot can be very effective if used properly. Also there is a close up on the child in the hood, mise en scene, this gives the viewers a mysterious felling, which is what is wanted to be achieved by the teaser trailer. Another very effective shot used is the establishing wide shot, this is used to show the ocean and the cliff edge. As a result this has shown me the importance location can make in the teaser trailer so when I create my teaser trailer I will make sure that there is a well known unusual and unique location. Finally just like all of the other teaser trailers I have seen, such as ‘Inception’, ‘Toy Story 3’ and ‘2012’, there has always been the institutions name, release date and website name. As a result this have furthered me in making sure that the teaser trailer includes all of this necessary information. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9W1dhqc-JBs

Slide 9:

‘The Last Airbender’ website was another website that was interactive in the sense that it allowed the users to play games. As a result as the website is more interesting and allows the users to visit the website for longer and not get drawn away there is a greater chance for the users to want to watch the full film in cinema. As a result this has shown me I have to try to draw users to the website for as long as I can. Another aspect that I liked about this website was that the release date of the film was always in the top right of the screen. As a result as the user is always seeing the release date they will most likely remember it and when the day comes they will probably want to watch the film. As a result this has shown me that if I show the release date on the website the users will remember the film release date more. Also there is a ‘features’ page that gives the users information about the elements of the world, for instance earth, wind, fire, e.t.c. As a result this gives the users more of an insight into the film as the film is based on the different elements of the world. As a result as the website is informing and giving an insight to the users about the film there is a greater chance that the users will watch the film which is what the website is trying to achieve. The poster for ‘The Last Airbender’ uses different shades of dark blue and black, this is deliberately done to create a sense of ambiguity and therefore when the audience see the poster they are unsure and therefore get tempted to watch the film. This has shown me that a poster that is unclear can also be effective. Also the poster is coherent as the poster shows the little boy in the tidal wave, as this is one of the elements it means that the poster is consistent. This has shown me that the poster that I create also has to be consistent to make the ancillary texts look a lot more professional.

Beyond Good And Evil 2 – Video Game :

Beyond Good And Evil 2 – Video Game Aswell as watching film teaser trailers I also watched video game teaser trailers. One of these included ‘Beyond Good And Evil 2', as this is obviously animation I thought that this will help me in my research. The most noticeable factor about this teaser trailer is the long zoom in on the burnt out car and then you can see the woman sitting on top of it. This is a very effective camera shot as not only do we see that the car is broken down, but we also see the location. As a result this shows the audience more of an insight into the teaser trailer. Therefore as the audience now know more about the video game and therefore there is more of a chance that the viewer will buy the game, which is the aim of the teaser trailer. In addition as the video game has next generation graphics, this teaser trailer has tried to emphasize this. As a result there is a long take on the pig and the fly. As a result this entices the audience to buy the game as this teaser trailer emphasizes the uniqueness of this video game compared to other ones. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkCXE1l5MVI

UP :

UP In addition another teaser trailer that I watched was ‘Up’, which has the genre of comedy. The most obvious factor that I have learnt from this is the obvious aspect from ‘Toy Story 3’, the use of vibrant colours. As a result this has shown me that in the genre of comedy a very important factor that has to be included in the teaser trailer is that of vibrant colours as this is a form of recognition for the audience. The examples of the vibrant colours in the ‘UP’ teaser trailer is that of sky blue and bright and highly saturated pink. Also when all of the balloons cover up the screen this indicates that the film will be for children as balloons is a form of mise en scene for a children's genre. As a result this has shown me the importance of adding mise en scene in the teaser trailer to wider the target audience and make the genre of the film easily recognizable. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dEdVwg7to4

Slide 12:

The most obvious aspect of the website that I noticed was how the colour blue was used excessively throughout the website. This was done deliberately as this colour is liked by a lot of people. As the target audience is that of children and both genders stereotypically like this colour, by using this colour the website will attract their attention which is the aim of the website. As a result this has shown me that the colour scheme that I choose has to be considered after I know my target audience. However a negative about this website is that behind every page there is a clip of the film. As a result this means that if the user has a slow computer it will take a long time for the page to load. As a result this has shown me that when I create the website I will have to make sure that the videos that I use if I do they will not take a long time to load as this will draw people away. Finally I noticed that at the bottom of the website they are also promoting the film ‘Finding Nemo’. However I think that this makes the website look cheap and therefore I will most probably decide not to do this. From the ‘UP’ poster I could see that in the bottom right hand corner the release date was shown and that the film was in IMAX 3D, as a result this is a selling point and this has shown me that by adding this it can increase the amount of people that watch the film. Also the poster is full of vibrant colours, as the genre is comedy the colour scheme reiterates this.

The A-Team :

The A-Team From ‘The A-Team’ teaser trailer I have learnt a lot of important information that will help me when I create my teaser trailer. Firstly I saw that ‘The A-Team’ trailer had the name of the institution after a scene . The institution is FOX, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch. As a result this has shown me it does not matter where the name of the institution is and therefore I now have more ideas about the teaser trailer that I create. Also as this teaser trailer has the genre of action, the first thing that I saw and realised as the amount of cuts there are and how the teaser trailer emphasises speed. An example of this is when the camera tracks the jeep. Also there are dark scenes to create an ambiguous feeling. As a result this makes the teaser trailer a lot more effective and entices the viewers to watch the whole film, as a result when I create my teaser trailer, and if it is the genre of action, I will make sure there are a lot of rapid cuts and quick camera movements. Also mise en scene is used to great effect, for instance guns are highlighted. As a result this makes the teaser trailer look a lot more realistic and therefore when the viewers are watching the teaser trailer they will believe it more and therefore this will entice them more to watch the full film. In addition there is also the iconic name of B.A, as this is the name that ‘The A-Team’ has made very popular, by the name being in the teaser trailer it makes the audience want to watch the whole film, which is the aim of the teaser trailer. Finally at the end the website the release date is shown, however aswell as this the last scene is the phrase, ’There Is No Plan B,’ as this is also an iconic caption from the film, by the audience hearing this phrase they will wan to watch the full film when it comes out in the cinema. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzHnpBlufCU

Slide 14:

‘The A-Team’ website that I watched gave me a lot of ideas. The aspect that I liked about this website was how the users could see biography's of the four characters. As a result this gives the user more of an insight into the film and also it makes the website a lot more interactive. As a result this has shown me that the more interactive that I can make the website the more effective it would be. In addition there is also a page where the screen splits into four screens and images appear of the four characters and each character leads to another page of the website. As a result this has given me more ideas that I can use for the website that I create. This has also shown me also that the more characters that I use the better the website can be as there will be more factors I can work with. The poster for ‘The A-Team’ film was also very effective and useful. Firstly a slogan was used. As a result this makes the poster a lot easier to remember and therefore so is the film. As the aim of the poster is to promote the film, by adding a slogan it fulfils its requirements. As a result I will make sure that the poster I create also includes a slogan. Also the poster uses a lot of mise en scene effectively. Some examples are the guns carried, suit, dog tags and stern looking faces. As a result altogether this makes the film look a lot more action packed, as this is the genre of the film this means that the audience will be watching their ideal film and therefore this has shown me that mise en scene has to be used in order to make the poster look professional and realistic.

Twilight :

Twilight From the teaser trailer that watched of ‘Twilight’ I realised and learnt how important it is to make the audience aware of the location. In the ‘Twilight’ teaser trailer there is an establishing wide shot of the large forest. As a result this gives a sense of isolation and set the tone for the film. As a result when I create my teaser trailer I will make sure the location is emphasised to make it more effective. In addition in the teaser trailer there is a sense of mystery. This is done by the long shot of the sun which later gets covered by clouds. As this creates a tense feeling amongst the viewers they will probably want to watch on to find out why. Another camera shot used effectively is the two shot. Regularly you see Robert Patterson and Kristen Stewart, this is deliberately done so the audience can see the facial expressions of them both, also sound bridges are used for the same reason. As a result as we see the worry on their faces the teaser trailer entices the audience to watch the real film as they want to know what is happening. However the most effective aspect of this teaser trailer is that at the start it is slowly paced and not many cuts but then all of a sudden half way through the teaser trailer there is a change of pace and many cuts. As a result this makes the film look a lot more eventful and therefore entices the viewers to watch the film in full. Finally in this teaser trailer there is also regular narrations, an example of this is when after a scene it says, ‘Bestseller,’ this is a great way to make the audience aware that a lot of people like the film and therefore they will also like the film. As a result this is a tool that can entice more people to watch the film when it arrives in cinema. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBvOhfL4mYw

Slide 16:

The first aspect that I noticed was how the website was coherent. An example of this is that when the page is loading the percentage icon is in a moon outlined in red. As this is the logo for the new ‘Twilight’ film it makes the film and the ancillary text consistent throughout. As a result this has shown me that the ancillary texts have to be consistent and have the same theme as the teaser trailer to make it look professional. Also this was the first film website in which I saw users could interact with other using a blog on the homepage. As a result as social networking is increasing in popularity by adding this in the website it gives a reason for people to visit the website. As a result as the viewers will increase for the website their is a greater chance that they will want to watch the film and therefore this has shown me that I may include a mini blog in the website that I create. Another aspect of the website that I liked was how there were opportunities for users to download wallpapers poster and other fan applications. As a result this makes the uses be more interactive with the website and therefore this is a positive of the website as this will make the website more enjoyable. This means that there is a greater chance that the viewers will like the website and hopefully watch the film. The poster of the ‘Twilight’ film is also very simple but effective. This is because there is only the two characters but from the facial expression, de-saturated colour and darkness shows the audience that the film will be eventful and edgy. As a result this has shown me the poster can have meaning by using mise en scene and changing the colour.

Cemetery Junction :

Cemetery Junction In the ‘Cemetery Junction’ teaser trailer I have learnt what can lose the audiences attention. In this teaser trailer the first scene if only three men taking, in total the scene lasted 43 seconds. When I was watching this I was getting distracted and bored as all that was happening was the three men talking in front of a blank white canvas. As a result this has shown me that the teaser trailer I have to create has to be eye-catching from the very beginning to the end. In addition there were also aspects of the teaser trailer which is the same as other teaser trailers. For instance the institution logo and name is at the start of ‘Cemetery Junction’ teaser trailer and the release date of the film is at the end. In conclusion I have seen what has to be included in the teaser trailer and ways to make the teaser trailer a lot more interesting and enticing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-ESq-Z8Vqc

Slide 18:

The next website I visited was for the film called ‘Cemetery Junction.’ This has the genre of comedy. I thought that the teaser trailer of this film was not the best but I think that the website was a lot better. The website involves the users as the user is able to take a 70’s quiz. As it is a 70’s film it means that the audience likes to watch films set in this era and therefore allowing them take a quiz it will entice the users to definitely watch the film. As a result this has shown me that a good way to entice the audience is to be more interacted and a good way is to include a quiz that is got something to do with the genre or the film itself. Also the website emphasises the reviews and ratings of the film. An example is when HEAT magazine say ‘Fantastic Film,’ this has shown me that a review or rating is a great way to increase the amount of viewers because as the reviews are good the users that have not seen the film will think that the film is good and therefore this will entice them to watch the film. Finally the website also emphasises the name of the two directors, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. As these two are very popular people in the UK by emphasising their names this is another great way to increase the amount of viewers of the website. As a result this has shown me that I should emphasise this as much as I can so there is a increase the amount of viewers of the film in the cinema. The poster for this film was also very simple but effective. This is because the emphasises is on the most popular actors and therefore this will be the most efficient and effective form to increase the amount of viewers of the film.

A Nightmare On Elm Street :

A Nightmare On Elm Street From the ‘A Nightmare On Elm Street’ teaser trailer I have learnt a lot of new aspects that can be used in the teaser trailer that I create. Like the ‘Twilight’ teaser trailer there is a camera shot that shows the location of the scene, however in this teaser trailer it is done via a long shot. This is done to the same effectiveness and therefore I will now experiment with the various shot types. Another long shot that is used effectively in this teaser trailer is when the men with guns get out of the car when they are chasing the solo man, this is an effective shot as you can see in the background the handicap that the man running away has. As a result as he is the underdog and been portrayed as an innocent character, by the extreme close-ups on his face of the frightened emotion whereas the people chasing him have no emotion, the audience is involved more as they are siding with the man running away. Aswell as this the teaser trailer also includes the institution name and logo at the start, the institution for this horror is New Line Cinema. As a result I will have to include an institution at the beginning of the teaser trailer that I create. Also the title of the film is shown at the end, however it is only in red and black to create a more chilling feeling. Another very effective method in this teaser trailer is that darkness is emphasised. This is done in many different ways, firstly all of the cuts fade to black, there is de-saturated and dark colours and when the man is creating a petrol bomb the fire is a lot brighter and has a very high contrast. Also there is an extreme close up on a hand that is made of metal and this also emphasises the unusualness of the film through mise en scene. As a result all of these methods create a edgy feeling for the viewer and if they like the genre of horror these methods entice them to watch the film when it is released in the cinema. Finally like the ‘Twilight’ teaser trailer this also starts of slowly paced, with few camera cuts, but then all of a sudden the speed of the cuts increase to add to the drama that is occurring in the scene at the current time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yB8XYZDu5zs

Slide 20:

The next teaser trailer that I watched was ‘ A Nightmare On Elm Street.’ The aspect that I liked was how there was a page called ‘Freddy Krueger Reborn.’ As he is an icon then by having a whole page dedicated to him then this will entice people to go on the page. As a result this means that the users on the website will be more interactive with the website and therefore there is a greater chance they will like the website which is what is needed in order for them to watch the film. This has shown me that I have to make sure that the website is interactive to entice people. In addition the navigation of this website is also very easy. This is because there is a ticker at the top of the screen with all of the headings and therefore this entices people to read the whole website as it is easy to find what they want. As a result this has shown me that navigation is a key aspect for the website to be liked. Finally there is also a heading for the shop. This is done to make more of a profit for the business off the film. As a result this has shown me that despite that I am not going to be able to sell products for the teaser trailer that I am going to create but I can create a heading to make it look more professional and to make it look like a real website designer has designed the website. The poster for the film is also effective. This is because of the colour scheme used. As the colours are dull, dark and de-saturated this instantly informs the audience that it is a horror. As a result this has shown me the colours that I will use have to reflect the genre to maximise the amount of people that see the poster and know about the film.

Terminator 4 Salvation :

Terminator 4 Salvation The next teaser trailer that I watched was the new ‘Terminator’ film, ’Terminator 4 Salvation.’ The most notable thing that I saw was how the teaser trailer created the teaser trailer to look very ambiguous. This is done purposely so the viewers will want to know what happens next and hopefully this would entice them to watch the film in the cinema. A way that this is done is by restricting the visibility of the audience by using unclear footage at the start. There is a created effect that the camera is broken, aswell as this it is a shaky handheld camera to make it even more vague for the viewer. Also the teaser trailer is very dark, dull and there is a lot of de-saturated colour. As a result this makes it even more harder for the audience to understand the plot of the film. In addition mise en scene is used to great effect. As the previous ‘Terminator’ films are very dependant on mise en scene I already knew that this teaser trailer would also include a lot of mise en scene. An example if the close up on the skull. As a skull has connotations of death this instantly puts the audience in an edgy feeling, which is exactly what this teaser trailer was designed to do. Also unlike any other teaser trailers that I have previously seen this is the first one that includes the actors names. An example of this is when it says the name of ‘Christian Bale,’ this is a deliberate ploy because as this is a well known actor and has a lot of fans this will also increase the views of this teaser trailer. Finally another aspect that I liked about this teaser trailer was that at the end after all of the action and fast paced cuts have finished then abruptly in three very slow cuts it says ‘ THE’ ‘END’ ‘BEGINS,’ this is done to great effect as the viewers feel on their edge of their seat. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYc3vOmof_8

Slide 22:

The website of ‘Terminator 4’ was very effective as it emphasised the plot of the film. As ‘Terminator’ was iconic for the technology used in the film by emphasising this in the website this makes the website a lot more interesting for the users. As a result because of the coherence this increases the amount of users on the website which is what I aim to do for the website that I create. This has shown me that the website that I create has to be coherent. In addition the website is also very interactive and entices the users to visit the website for a longer period of time. This is because there are links that interests the users, for instance there is a link named ‘Terminate Yourself,’ as a result this increase the time that the users spend on the website as they will be going on the link, this will therefore increase the probability of the users watching the film. This has shown me that I will have to include a section of the website that entices the users to click on and spend time on it. The poster for the ‘Terminator Salvation’ film is also coherent. Also mise en scene is used effectively. This is because of the weapons and the bulletproof jacket that the actors are wearing are enticing the audience to watch the full film. This is because as the genre is action and as this has conventions of fighting and killing by including a gun in the poster it shows this instantly to the audience. As a result when they see the poster they will know the genre and therefore most probably want to watch it. This has shown me that the poster that I create should include the conventions of the genre of my teaser trailer to increase the popularity and effectiveness of it.

500 Days Of Summer :

500 Days Of Summer From the ‘500 Days Of Summer’ teaser trailer, which has the genre of romance, I learnt a lot of aspects as this was the first teaser trailer that I watched from this genre. The first thing that I noticed was how the first thing that the audience saw was the name of the institution. The institution name was Fox, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch. As a result this has shown me that no matter the genre there should me an institution name at the start of the teaser trailer. In addition an effective shot was the two shot of the man and woman on the bench. As a result the audience could see both of the characters and how they reacted. As a result this has shown me how this camera shot can be utilised to my favour an to create meaning in the teaser trailer. Another effective shot was of the man on the bridge, but it was a long shot and therefore in the background we can see the location of the film. As a result this gives a lot more of an insight to the audience about the film, therefore there is a higher probability that they will want to watch the film as they are more involved. As a result I will make sure that a location is noticeable for the teaser trailer that I create. Finally in the film there are also a lot of cuts, as a result this creates more interest as the teaser trailer is a lot more eventful, therefore there is more of a chance that people will watch the full trailer. As well as this the title name of the film is also emphasised as this is shown throughout the teaser trailer, this is also a good aspect as this informs the audience constantly the name of the film and therefore they will most likely remember the name. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILCB_f0IIyI

Slide 24:

The ‘500 Days Of Summer’ website used their ratings to the maximum effectiveness. They have done this to increase the viewers of the film as the website is working as a promotional method and as the reviews are excellent, ‘Coolest romantic comedy of the year – HEAT’ this will entice people to watch the film. As a result this means that the amount of viewers will increase for the film. This has shown me the importance of showing the reviews and ratings. Also the website is very interactive. This is because there is an option where the users can ‘Make Your Own Mixtape,’ as a result this will increase the time that people spend on the website and therefore there is a greater chance that they will want to watch the full film. This has shown me that I should create a website that is also interactive to increase the viewers for the film. Finally the poster of the film is coherent and is aimed at there target audience. This is because as the poster is full of images which is representing different days and this is also the storyline of the teaser trailer. As a result this has shown me the importance of coherence. Also as the target audience in teenagers and young adults by including pictures and casting young adults this will automatically attract the attention of their target audience. As a result this has shown me the poster that I create will have to be targeted at a audience and I have to use the conventions of the genre.

Ong Bak 3 :

Ong Bak 3 Firstly the aspect that I liked from this teaser trailer, which has the genre of action as it is a martial arts film, was how during the teaser trailer there was a narration. As a result this was giving me information about the film and as the words used were worlds regarded with conflict, such as tyrant, it made me want to watch the film when it comes out in cinema. As a result I think that this is a great mechanism to emphasise certain aspects of the teaser trailer and to make the plot of the teaser trailer a lot more dramatic. Also in the narration ‘Tony Jaa’ is emphasised, this is done deliberately because as he is a well known martial artist the teaser trailer has used this as a selling and enticing mechanism for people to continue to watch on. In addition the use of long shots and wide shots are used to great effectiveness. This is used deliberately to give the audience the scenes location, as we can see Tony Jaa fighting against an army of people the audience automatically side with him. Also there is a slight low angle shot on him to indicate that he has power and therefore all of these aspect entice and involve the audience which will benefit the film in the long term as they will most probably want to watch the full film. Finally after all of the action packed teaser trailer at the end the name of the film is shown, however this does not sound very effective but because the teaser trailer is a fast pace and as the title name is shown on the screen slowly it makes the audience remember the name which is the aim of the teaser trailer. As a result this is an idea that I will think to use in the teaser trailer that I create. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPrfBcoVmbc

Slide 26:

The next website I went on was of the film ‘Ong Bak 3’. The most obvious thing that I noticed was that the website was emphasising Tony Jaa. As he was the most famous actor in the film and is regarded as one of the best actor in martial arts I think that the website had to emphasise his name. In the website you can read his life story and what he thinks of the film. As a result this has shown me that I should emphasise aspects of the website that I think that people will like, this will then improve the amount of people that visit the website and like the website. In addition the website includes a gallery. As this has the genre of martial arts, and as pictures of this is liked by a wide range of people by including a gallery this is tempting the users to look at the pictures. As a result if they like the pictures they will most probably want to watch the film. This has shown me how effective the gallery can be and that if there are any interesting scenes in my teaser trailer I should include them in the gallery. The poster for this film is also very effective. Mise en scene is used in this, for instance the facial expressions of anger and anguish of the two fighters, as a result this creates a sense of realism for the audience. Also the robes that they are wearing is the stereotypical clothing of a far east martial arts experts, this also makes the film more realistic. This has shown me that mise en scene has to be used in the poster that I create. Also the poster is coherent as fire is emphasised in all 3 texts. As a result this makes the film look a lot more consistent. This has shown me that there should be a pattern between the teaser trailer that I create and the two ancillary texts.

Alice In Wonderland :

Alice In Wonderland The ‘Alice In Wonderland’ teaser trailer taught me a lot of new things. Firstly I saw the aspects of the teaser trailer that is the same as the previous teaser trailers that I have seen. For instance there is an institution logo at the start, Disney Films, and at the end the release date is shown aswell as making the audience aware that it is in 3D. As 3D is becoming a big selling point I think that this addition in the teaser trailer alone increases the amount of viewers of this film. At the end when is says the release date of the film the release date fades out into a picture and then another scene, I thought that this was an effective transition and I think that this will be a useful addition to my teaser trailer. Also I noticed that the most common shot in this teaser trailer was a long shot. This is deliberately deployed as in this shot you can see the character but also the background, as this is a fantasy film this shot sets the scene extremely well as now the audience can see more of the film and therefore they will feel more involved into the film. In addition mise en scene is used to great effectiveness. For instance as this is a fairy tale film and is targeted for children and teenagers by making Alice wear a dress this instantly entices this age range to continue to watch this teaser trailer to the end. Also the dress has connotations of innocence. As a result this has shown me the effect that mise en scene can have in a teaser trailer and therefore I will make sure that the mise en scene in my teaser trailer is as accurate as possible and creates as much meaning as it can. Finally another effective method in this teaser trailer was the low angle and high angle shots used. This is obvious when Alice see Johnny Depp, this is used to show the difference in power between the two and also the audience also see the difference of size between the two. As a result this has shown me the effectiveness of this camera angle and therefore I will make sure I will use it in my teaser trailer to create more of a meaning. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VHRz1S_kYI

Slide 28:

The ‘Alice in Wonderland’ website was clearly consistent with the teaser trailer and the poster. This is because in all of the texts there is the same location. For instance we can see brightly clouded fields, flowers and the same two characters. As a result this makes the ancillary texts look as if they are following on and so when the user visits the website they will already have an insight into it. This has shown me the importance of making the ancillary texts coherent. Also there is a games section on the website. This is also very important as the target audience is children and as they like playing games this is a great way to entice them to go on the website. As a result the more people that visit the site the more people that will watch the film which is what the website is aiming to do. As well as the website the poster is also used to promote the film. The most obvious aspect of the poster is that there is effective use of colours. This is because as the target audience is children who are always attracted to vibrant colours and therefore by the wide range of colours being used in the poster this will attract their attention. As a result this has shown me that I should manipulate the poster so it is the same as the genre of my teaser and therefore it will be a lot more effective.

Despicable Me :

Despicable Me The fist thing that I noticed from this teaser trailer was that it is similar to the ‘Cemetery Junction’ teaser trailer. This is because like that teaser trailer this is set in front of a blank white canvas. However I think that for this particular film it worked out a lot better compared to that teaser trailer. I think that this teaser trailer made it a lot more interesting as now we are only looking at the characters and not getting distracted. As a result this has shown me a way that a plain background can have a positive effect on the teaser trailer. In addition as this has the genre of comedy it is pivotal that the teaser trailer also includes a lot of humour. An example of some humour in this teaser trailer is when the character is shooting other characters out of a gun onto the screen, I think that this is a great way to entice their target audience, children and young teenagers, to watch the film when it arrives in the cinema. As a result this has shown me that I have to create a teaser trailer for the target audience. Also in this teaser trailer there is a long take, there is a take that lasts a total of 43 seconds. As a result this may not always work in a teaser trailer as a traditional teaser trailer is meant to be fast paced, however for this particular teaser trailer it works to great effect as this concentrates on the humour side of the teaser trailer. Finally there are also usual aspects of this teaser trailer, for instance there is an institution name at the start and the release date of the film is also at the end. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsiayV5LuD0

Slide 30:

The aspect that I liked about this website was the way that it was clearly visible who it was targeted at. This is because there was vibrant colours and huge rounded font. This made it clear that it was a comedy targeted for children. As a result this has shown me the importance of making sure that the website is aimed at a target age like this website. As a result this will make the website a lot more effective. Also this website has an option for games. As the target audience is children, and they enjoy playing games, by giving the option for the children to play games then this will increase the amount of time that they will spend on the website. As a result this will give a higher probability of the children wanting to watch the film. This has show me the importance in adapting the website for the target audience to increase the amount of viewers that visit the website. As a result this has helped me a lot. Furthermore the cursor for the website changed from the traditional arrow to a little hand, by the slight amendment it made the website look more interesting to children and made it look like a comedy for young children. This has further reiterated to me that I have to try to adapt the website that I crate to the genre. Finally the poster for the film also made it clear that it was a comedy. This is because it is clear that it is an animation picture and the rounded text and the unusual looking charters made it more obvious. In addition the actors name Steve Carell who is known for his comedy performances makes this clear, all of these aspects are conventions for the genre of comedy. This has shown me that the poster that I create has to be designed so when the audience see it they can clearly establish what genre the film is.

Breaking Dawn :

Breaking Dawn The most notable aspect of this teaser trailer that I noticed was that like the other ‘Twilight’ teaser trailers this also includes a narration. An example of one of the things said is ‘New Life Is Coming’ and ‘Bestseller.’ As a result this entices the audience to continue to watch on because as the reviews are excellent they will want to also want to have an opinion. Also romance is emphasised in the teaser trailer. This is done so when the action starts in the teaser trailer, for instance the close up on the wolfs face, it is more dramatic and has more of an impact on the viewer. This is done by the long shot at the start when the woman is walking down the aisle, there is also an extreme close up of the ring going on her finger. As a result this creates a reaction from the audience which is the aim of the teaser trailer. Another interesting aspect is how the teaser trailer starts of very slow until the 59th second and when it says ’Change Everything,’ as a result as it all of a sudden it speeds up and it adds to the drama and looks more exciting and moving. Also we regularly see the two shot of the two main characters, Robert Patterson and Kristen Stewart. As a result we can see the facial expressions of the two of them at the same time and therefore the audience have more of an insight into the characters of the film. Finally the teaser trailer also uses methods to create an ambiguous affect. For instance a low shot is used of people running but all you can see is the feet, as a result this create the sense of insecurity to the audience and therefore this is another method to entice people to watch on as they want to find out why they are running. Also the teaser trailer ends with a fade to a black screen, after it says the release date and the website of the film. Therefore the fade to black creates a sense of danger and therefore involves the audience as they are interested in the film. As a result this has shown me different ways that I can create a teaser trailer that makes the audience feel in a hostile position. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1l71UXPtBng

Slide 32:

The poster for this new ‘Twilight’ film was also very effective as it uses many conventions for the genre which is a action fantasy. This is done by the darkness that we can see. As a result this creates an edgy feeling to the audience as this gives the impression that something bad is about to happen. As a result this has shown me how important colour is in the poster. Also the colour red is used, this is in the woman's hair. The colour is only visible in her hair but as the colour is bright and against the colour black it stands out. As a result as red has connotations of death and danger this gives the impression to the audience that death is about to occur. As a result this entices people to watch the actual film as this is what people expect to see in a film. Therefore this has shown me that the colours that I use I have to decide what the connotations are to maximise the meaning behind the poster.

Fallout 3 – Video Game :

Fallout 3 – Video Game Firstly what I liked about this teaser trailer is the long take which in total lasts 1.28. This is a very effective shot as in the long take is starts with an extreme close up of a light bulb, but then the camera zooms out to show the location which is a derelict town. As a result this has more of an impact on the viewer as they were not expecting it. Also the scene is dark and there is a deliberate use of many different shades of black. As a result this creates an edgy feeling. This has shown me the impact colours can have on the audience. Also a lot of mise en scene is used and this also creates a chilling effect. Firstly guns are used aswell as the man wearing the heavy armoured suit. As a result this creates a sense of realism to the audience and therefore they feel more involved in the teaser trailer. Also as it is set in a derelict town the viewers feel more jittery. Finally despite it being a game teaser trailer there are also similar points to a film teaser trailer. For instance the institution name is at the start and the name of the game is at the end aswell as the website. However an effective factor is how the name of the game ‘Fallout 3’ fades out. For instance the Out 3 fades out and all you can see is Fall. As this is a play on word the audience think for themselves which is another great way to involve and entice the audience to buy the game when it arrives in stores. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxSdbSNckTQ

Slide 34:

This is a video game website, as a result I can see a major difference, however there are still aspects that are the same. An aspect that I like about this website is how there are wallpapers of the game that the users can download. As a result this makes the website a lot more interactive and therefore enjoyable for the user. This means that there is a better chance that the user will want to buy the game as they find the website good and therefore they will think that the game is just as good. This has shown me that I should try to make the website enjoyable as possible by making ways that the users do not mind spending time on it. Also the opening page of the website says that the user has to type in their date a birth. By this addition it gives the impression that the website is that of a agents and that it is confidential. As a result this slight adaptation of the website makes the website a lot more effective as it makes the website more meaningful. This has shown me a different way to make my website unique. In addition the poster for ‘Fallout 3’ is very interesting. This is because the teaser trailer implies that there is danger and death through guns, but the poster is of an image of a happy family playing. As a result this is plays on the minds of the people that see the poster so then this makes the poster memorable for the audience as they are thinking about it. As a result despite this being unorthodox it works effectively. As a result this has shown me a different way that the poster can be designed to create meaning.

Call of Duty Black Ops – Video Game :

Call of Duty Black Ops – Video Game Firstly from this video game teaser trailer I learnt a lot of new information and ways to create a hostile felling. For instance the opening scene is very dark and all you can see is black, dark blue and then flashing red lights. As red has connotations of anger this instantly gives an anxious feeling to the audience. As a result this is an idea that I will consider in the teaser trailer that I create. Also the camera is shaky as it is deliberately handheld. As a result this is another method to create a hostile effect to the viewers. As a result this entices the audience to continue to watch on as this is what they want to see. Also aswell as this there are a lot of explosions in the teaser trailer, this adds to the edgy feeling and therefore this is another great effect to entice the audience to continue to watch on. Mise en scene is used to great effect. An example is the guns, the armour suits and knifes. As a result this gives the sense of realism to the audience and therefore this will involve the audience as they will feel that they are witnessing real events. As a result this has shown me the importance of mise en scene. Also another method that is effective is how the speed of the teaser trailer constantly changes. For instance the teaser trailer is slow at one stage then it is rapid all of a sudden. Also the slow parts are dark and the fast paced action is bright. As a result this create a unusual feeling to the audience and therefore as the audience is enticed there is a higher probability that the audience will watch on. Finally there is an aspect that is the same despite this being a teaser trailer of a video game. For instance the name of the institution is at the start and the release date is at the start. However the aspect that I liked was how at the end after all of the action is over the screen goes blank for 7 seconds and then the name of the game appears, after that the release date appears underneath fading onto the screen. As a result I found this an effective method and I may consider using a similar effect in the teaser trailer that I create. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1pUiQxVjvU

Slide 36:

This was a video game website and from the opening page this was clear. As the homepage was of somebody playing the game this outlined to the audience about the game. However the person playing was very good and killing everybody insight. This was deliberately included as this gave the perception to the audience that the game was fun and easy and therefore they could do the same and be good. As this is what most people want this entices them to buy the game. As a result this has shown me that in the website I should include footage that the audience will like and entice them to watch the teaser trailer. Also this website matches the genre of the video game. As the video game has the genre of action and is technology based the font in the website is the same as the stereotypical computer font. As a result this gives the impression that the game is realistic and as this is a popular format in a video game this is another great way to increase viewers. This has shown me the importance of coherence for the website that I create. In addition the poster for this game is very simple but effective. For instance apart from the range of colours used the rest of the poster is simple. However the mise en scene of the gun shows the audience that the game is action based and includes conflict. As this has a wide audience this will be liked by a lot of viewers and therefore should increase buyers for the game just because of the gun. Also the poster includes the name of the game and the release date in a font style that is traditionally the font in compute based films. As a result this has shown me that a poster can still be effective as long as conventions for the genre are visible.

The Social Network :

The Social Network The most obvious factor that I noticed was how this teaser trailer chose to use Facebook instead of any other social networking website. I think that they have done this because as Facebook is the most popular social networking website as it has over 500 million users there is a higher chance that the viewers can relate to something. An example of this is how there are close ups on the pictures that are of people that have posted their pictures on the website. As a result this a great way to make the teaser trailer look realistic and therefore this has shown me a different way I can make a teaser trailer relate to the audience. Another method that this teaser trailer relates the teaser trailer with the audience is that the teaser trailer is set in a university. As the target audience for this teaser trailer is teenagers and young adults, and as they are most likely to be in education this is another way that the audience can relate to the film. As a result this has shown me how important the setting in the scene can be. Also in this teaser trailer it starts off very slowly and then halfway through the teaser trailer if speeds up rapidly. As a result this makes the teaser a lot more effective. This is done by the rate of the cuts, for instance at the start there wee not many cuts, however towards the end there were cuts every second. As a result this showed more of the film and therefore there was a greater chance of the viewers watching the full film. Also as Justin Timberlake is casting in the film and as there are a lot of scenes people are able to see more of him. As a result as he is a worldwide icon this will also increase the amount of viewers of the film. In addition the setting of the teaser trailer is Harvard University, as this is a very popular university worldwide I think that this choice of setting is another fantastic method to entice people to continue to watch the teaser trailer. This is because the audience have something that they can relate to and therefore this will mean that the teaser trailer will be doing its job and is fit for purpose. Finally the teaser trailer also creates a sense of hostility to the audience as the caption is ‘You don't get over 500 million friends without making enemies.’ As a result this all of a sudden adds a flip side to the teaser trailer and change the normality of the life of the people to an edgy feeling. Also the cuts fade to black which also emphasises a darkness that is happening in the film. As a result this has shown me how important and effective a line of text can make. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lB95KLmpLR4&feature=channel

Slide 38:

The next website I visited for films was for the film ‘The Social Network.’ The aspect that I noticed was the first person that we see in the website was Justin Timberlake, as he is a worldwide icon by including him the popularity of the film also increases and therefore the views on the website does aswell. As a result this has shown me the importance of the website as a form of promotion, however as I do not have access to celebrities this will make it difficult for my website to be as popular. Another aspect that I liked about the website was how the homepage showed ratings that people thought of the film. As they are obviously showing the positive ratings then this will make the viewers think that the film is also good and therefore they will continue onto the website. As a result as they will be browsing the website there is a greater chance that they will want to watch the film. This has shown me that that by just including ratings on the homepage can entice people to watch the film as they will continue onto the website. As a result I will make sure ratings of my teaser trailer are on the website. Also the poster is very interesting and effective. This is because the poster is simple but still informs the audience what the film is about. This is because as well as the name of the film telling the films plot the images that make up the word ‘Social’ are of people socialising. As a result this shows the audience that the film will be about this and therefore this will definitely attract their target audience of teenagers and young adults. As a result this has shown me that I should use play on mechanisms to make the audience think about the poster but still make it simple like this poster.

Cloverfield :

Cloverfield The first thing that I noticed about this teaser trailer was that it was very shaky, furthermore I conducted some research and it is said that this is the first ever film that is filmed using a handheld camera. However I think that this creates an edgy feeling to the viewers as it makes the scene look a lot more irregular and as a result this creates a hostile environment. I think that I may consider using this in the teaser trailer that I create as this is a great way to create meaning. Aswell as the scenes being shaky so is the release date at the end to create more of unusual environment for the audience. Also another aspect that I liked about this was how you can clearly see the difference from the equilibrium and the disequilibrium. This is clearly done by the simple transition of a cut, however the cut is pure black and lasts for 4 seconds. As a result this create a sinister feeling and therefore interacts the audience into the film, which is the aim of the teaser trailer. In addition the setting of this teaser trailer is also effective and you can clearly see that it was thought about. I think this because it is a house party and also it is because someone is leaving, as the film is targeted at teenagers and young adults and the stereotypical person is similar to this this it is a enticing factor for the audience to watch on. Also as it is a leaving party and then the disequilibrium occurs the audience feel even more gloomy. As a result this has shown me the importance of location and setting for the teaser trailer that I create. Also facial expressions are emphasised in this teaser trailer by the using of the midshot. As a result we can see the reactions of the actors and therefore this gives a more realistic affect to the teaser trailer and makes the audience feel that they are there. As a result this has shown me the importance of making sure that the audience feel that they are in the film to maximise the drama in the teaser trailer. Furthermore a wideshot is used to great effectiveness. This shot is used to show the city of New York. As this city is popular worldwide it works as an attraction to draw more people to watch the teaser trailer, as a result this means that the teaser trailer will be doing its job. As a result this has shown me that location is a key point in a teaser trailer and I will have to make sure that the location in my teaser trailer is popular and well known. Finally there is a narration in the teaser trailer and this is another method to inform the audience more about the film, as this film is pproduced by J.J Abrams, this was an obvious chance to attract more viewers and therefore this is what the ‘Cloverfield’ teaser trailer has done. As a result this has shown me that a narration is a great way to entice more viewers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeZL5Z4a37w

Slide 40:

The ‘Clovefield’ website showed me a lot of good points that I will consider for the website that I create. The aspect that I liked about this website was how it involved the user. They done this by saying ‘Where Was You When The Monster Hit?’ and then they allowed the user to vote. As a result this made the website more enticing for the user and more likable. As a result as they would spend more time on the website they will most likely want to watch the film and therefore the purpose of the website would have worked. This has shown me I have to create a website that is enjoyable for the user. Another good point of this website was how the background would be recognised by everybody and therefore this will grab their attention. As it is a picture of the Statue of Liberty and as it is destroyed the user will be drawn into the website as they will want to know why the iconic statue is destroyed. This has shown me that I have to entice the user to go onto the website and a good way to do this is to have a popular location and therefore I will take a lot of time to think of the location of my teaser trailer. Also the website allowed the user to have wallpapers and ringtones by downloading it from the website. As a result this interacts the user to the website and therefore they will have more of an involvement in the film. This has shown me to maximise the amount of people that visit the website and the amount of time they spend on the website I have to make it enjoyable for my target audience. As a result depending on my target audience I will allow them to download certain additional content. The poster for ‘Cloverfield’ also entices people to watch the film and makes the audience remember the film. This is done by the use of a slogan and iconic locations. By having a catchy slogan ‘Something Has Found Us’ this will make the audience remember the film as they feel a edgy emotion. Also by including a location that is iconic the audience will read and look at the poster in detail. This has shown me that in order to entice the audience I have to include a slogan and a iconic location then there is a higher chance that people will remember the film name.

Cloverfield 2 :

Cloverfield 2 Aswell as analysing the ‘Cloverfield’ teaser trailer I also watched the ‘Cloverfield 2’ teaser trailer. The first factor that I noticed was that like the first teaser trailer this also had a narration. However the most notable difference is that the narration in this one is always followed by a scene and the narration is more jumpy. An example is ‘It Came Without Warning,’ as a result by this addition it creates more suspense and tension for the audience as they can see that the popular ‘Cloverfield’ monster is going to attack again. As a result this has shown me that a narration can create a lot of tension and anxiety for the audience. Aswell as a narration the scenes are all taken with a handheld camera to create more edgy feeling for the viewers and to give the audience a more of a sense that they are actually in the scene. In addition a low angle shot is used to show the damage being caused in the city and to make the damage look more catastrophic. As a result this gives the impression to the audience that the damage is worse than in actually is. As a result this has shown me that the position of the camera can add more effects and therefore in the storyboard that I create I will make sure that there are a variety of camera shots. Also in this teaser trailer we also see a scene from the first film, the monster getting killed, this gives the impression that the monster is dead but then the narration appears on screen and it says ‘So We Thought,’ as a result this reverses the emotions of the viewers and now they begin to realise that the monster is alive and carnage is about to erupt. Also after this the screen goes black to create a more edgy feeling. As a result this has shown me the effect a disequilibrium can create on the audience. As a result I will make sure that this theory occurs in the teaser trailer that I create. Finally the ending of the teaser trailer is also very effective and is fitting for the genre of this film. The ending ends the usual way, release date and website at the end but then the screen turns black for 5 seconds. As a result this creates more of a hostile and edgy feeling which is what the teaser trailer is aimed to do. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXWZS2MrdO8

Slide 42:

The ‘Cloverfield 2’ poster is very effective and informative. This is because this poster has connotations of many things. For instance as the poster is very dark and the two colours used are different shades of black and dark blues this indicates to the audience that the film will be a horror. As a result if somebody is interested in this genre they will remember the film as soon as they see the poster as they will instantly know that the genre is horror. This has shown me that I have to make the genre easily visible in the poster for my target audience. In addition the poster is also very ambiguous and does not give too much away. This is because the only thing that we can make out is a derelict town and a broken tower. As a result this makes the audience think about the film and therefore there is a greater chance that they will remember the film. Also to make the film look more unclear the font is blurred to emphasise the ambiguity of the film. This has shown me that making the poster unclear it can make the audience think more and hopefully remember the film name which is the aim of the poster.

The Expendables :

The Expendables When I watched this teaser trailer I instantly noticed that this was different compared to any others that I watched. This is because in all of the other teaser trailers there were scenes that matched the genre of the film, however in this teaser trailer there are no action scenes. In this teaser trailer all you see is the actors faces in a close-up. However I think that this is done because the cast line up involves all of the most popular actors that concerned with the action genre. As a result this in itself is a fantastic method to entice people to watch the full film, which is the aim of the teaser trailer. As a result I think that I cannot do this in my teaser trailer as I do not have access to these popular people. Also the animal of a black crow and a metal skull is emphasised, as a crow has connotations of death this little moment of mise en scene changes the context of the teaser trailer from showing the stars of the film to being a film that will most probably have a lot of murders. As a result as this is what their target audience want to see I think that this is a deliberate but simple ploy to make the teaser trailer a lot more effective and memorable. As a result this has shown me a different side to a teaser trailer as this is a unusual and unique teaser trailer which has now given me a lot more ideas. In the second half of this teaser trailer it gives different images of the actors, but now they are in action. Also in the narration they are labelled to be action legends and then that is followed by the actors names, Li, Couture, Willis, Statham and Schwarzenegger. As a result this is another ploy to entice people to watch the film just because of the actors. As most people like at least one of these actors as there is a 5 star line up by emphasising the actors it will definitely increase the views. Finally an aspect that I liked was the ending, in the ending we see a close up of the crow which then fly's directly towards the camera. As a result this makes the audience jump as they are not expecting it and not used to it. This means that the teaser trailer has involved the audience to great effect and there is a greater chance that they will watch the full film. Also after this ‘The Expendables’ name is shown, which has lights behind it, as lights have connotations of survival this indicates to the audience that this film will be action packed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VgJtfffrl0

Slide 44:

The next website I browsed on was for the new film called ‘The Expendables,’ the aspect that I liked about this website was how it was simple but effective. This is because at the beginning the website looks a bit boring as it is a plain white background but then when you move the mouse over the actors name then there are the categories. As this film is mainly popular because of the actors in the film the reason why the website is like this is because this is a great way to emphasise the actors in the film. As a result this works perfectly for this film but for my film as there is no celebrity I think that this would not work for me. In addition the website is coherent as the categories have a icon next to them and the icon is a skull. As a result this makes the website look a lot more consistent and therefore when the viewers watch the teaser trailer and the website straight after they will understand it more as they follow on. As a result this makes the users more involved and interested in the film. As this is the aim of the website, promote the film, this has shown me that the website that I create will have to be coherent throughout the ancillary texts. Also the poster for the film is cleverly designed as the actors names are clearly visible. As this is a selling point of the film this was emphasised in the poster. This has shown me that I should emphasise the aspects that will be liked by the audience in the poster. Also the poster emphasises a skull, as a result this has connotations of death and as the audience that like this genre, action, will expect to see death this emphasises that there will be death and therefore this entices people to watch the film. As a result this has shown me that the poster that I create should include connotations of the genre to make it more obvious and enticing for the audience.

Kick Ass :

Kick Ass This ‘Kick Ass’ movie has the genre of comedy and was a popular movie worldwide. The opening of this teaser trailer is unique as I have not seen one that is similar. The first scene is a long shot that zooms into the man in a superhero suit. This shot was very effective as the zoom in shows where the superhero his and therefore forces a reaction from the audience. As a result this has given me an insight in how the zoom in camera shot can be used to maximum effectiveness. Another effective camera shot is the low angle shot which is used in this teaser trailer. This is used several times, for example when they show the building from the bottom, this camera shot shows the audience the size of the building and therefore when the superhero jumps off there is more of a dramatic response. Also a similar shot is used when we see the close up of the superhero’s face, this is done to emphasise that the superhero has power and authority. This has shown me a more wider variety of shot and angles. Also mise en scene is used to make it look more realistic for the audience, the most notable is the suit that the superhero wears. As a result this makes the film look a lot more believable to the audience and therefore there is a greater chance that they would enjoy the film and watch it until the end. Finally in the second half of the teaser trailer there is a narration of the characters in the film, they are called ‘Hit Girl,’ ‘Big Daddy’ and ‘Red Mist’. As a result the superheroes are purposely named this because as the target audience for this film are children these names are well known and most teenagers would be enticed to watch the film just because of their names. As a result this has shown me the importance in the naming of the people in the teaser trailer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKjycnhKxY4

Slide 46:

The ‘Kick Ass’ website which has the genre of comedy is a very effective website. This is because it from the home page you can tell that the film is a comedy. This is done through the colours used and the images of the superheroes emphasises that they are superhero spoofs through mise en scene. As a result the user can see that it is a comedy and therefore if they want to see a comedy film they will more likely to watch this film. This has shown me that from the very start I have to make it obvious what the genre of the film is in order for the film to maximise the amount of people that watch the film. In addition the website entices the users to stay in the website a lot longer, this is done because there is an option that the user can go on which is a quiz that determines if ‘You Have What It Takes To Be A Superhero.’ as a result as this is a very tempting page to click on and take the quiz because the user would be curious they will be enjoying themselves more because of the film. This has shown me the importance in making sure that the website is interactive and fun to visit. The poster for this film is also very effective and eye-catching. This is because of the vibrant colours used. As a result when somebody sees the poster they will look at it in detail as they have been drawn towards it. This has shown me that the poster that I create has to be eye-catching and this can be done through vibrant colours. Also mise en scene is used effectively as when the audience sees the poster they will know the film is a superhero spoof and is a comedy film. As a result if the audience wants to see a comedy they will most likely be drawn to watching this film. This has shown me that I have to make it clear what the genre of the film is and a great way to do this is through mise en scene.

Robin Hood :

Robin Hood From the ‘Robin Hood’ teaser trailer I noticed how in the scene when there is speed of some sort, such as when they are riding on a horse or when the boy is running, it is been filmed using a handheld camera. As a result the shaky camera adds to the effectiveness and makes the audience feel that they are running as this is the similar movement that the audience will see if they are running. As a result this camera shot has shown me the realism that a camera shot can create. In addition in this teaser trailer which has the genre of action and heritage, there is an effective use of colour. For instance the scenes are very dark as they are mainly are different shades of black and dark blues. As a result this gives a more edgy feeling to the audience and therefore this has shown me that if I want to create a similar teaser trailer colours can add a lot more effect to the audience. Also mise en scene is used to maximum effectiveness, as this is a heritage film it is pivotal that it looks as if the scenes are similar to what happened hundreds of years ago. As a result by including body armour, weapons and horses it makes it look a lot more realistic and therefore believable which is what is most important for a film with this genre. Finally the close up camera shot is used to promote the actors in this film. For instance in the teaser trailer there is a close up of Russell Crowe, as he a well known worldwide actor by emphasising him in the teaser trailer it works as an excellent selling point. As a result this is increasing the amount of viewers for the film which is the aim for the teaser trailer. Also the close ups show the facial expressions of the people in the teaser trailer, as there is a lot of action in this teaser trailer by showing the facial expressions of the characters it gives the audience more of an insight. As a result this has shown me how you can give the audience more of an insight into the film. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSqL9ygBCck

Slide 48:

The ‘Robin Hood’ website was unique in the sense that the navigation of the website was completely different compared to others that I have seen. This is because the way that the user navigates around the website is by moving the mouse to the right or left of the screen. Also every time the screen moves left or right there is a different picture of the film and the picture includes a lot of mise en scene, weapons and blood. As a result this makes navigating the website very easy and also interesting for the user. This has shown me a way to entice users to visit the website is to make the navigation simple and interesting by including colourful image that relate to the film. Also there is a section in the website that gives the users information about Nottingham. As Nottingham is the location of ‘Robin Hood’ and is popular because of this by giving information about the location it gives the users more of an insight into the film. Also aswell as giving information about the history the website also allows the users to buy the book and this gives a further insight into the film. As a result this makes the audience more involved in the film and therefore there is a greater probability that they will want to watch the film as they are interested in ‘Robin Hood’. This has shown me that the more of an insight that I give to the users about the film the more chance that they will want to watch the film. Finally the poster is also very effective as the mise en scene used in the poster shows the genre and what type of film it is. As Russell Crowe is holding a bow and arrow and has blood running down his face this indicates to the audience that the film will be full of action and include a lot of conflict. Also the actors names are shown in the bottom right, this is deliberately done as the actors are popular and therefore this will also increase the amount of people that will want to watch the film as the actors fan base will want to watch the film. As a result this has shown me the importance of using mise en scene in the poster to inform the audience more about the film and therefore increase the amount of people that will want to watch the film.

Saw 6 :

Saw 6 ‘Saw 6’ has the genre of horror and this is visible form the start as the name of the institution is ‘Twisted Pictures,’ also at the end when it shows the release date it says Halloween instead of the date. As a result this has shown me ways to manipulate aspects of the teaser trailer to create a more sinister feeling and therefore make the teaser trailer match the genre category more. Also the first scene in the teaser trailer is an extreme close up of a light, as it is obviously very bright it makes the audience blink and then after a couple of seconds it explodes. As a result this succession of events makes the audience jump and therefore from the very first scene the teaser trailer has enticed and attracted the audience to continue to watch on. Furthermore the colour red is emphasised. This is a very effective device as the colour red has connotations of death and danger and therefore by emphasising this colour it is representing the genre of horror and this is showing the audience that death is about to come. As a result by including this in the teaser trailer this will definitely entice the audience to watch the full film as in a horror film people want to see blood and gore. Also blood is shown in the teaser trailer when the mans hand is being pierced with a needle and therefore this further gives the audience what they want to see. Finally there are a wide range of camera shots and a sequence of quick cuts. This is done to create more drama, examples of shots is a high angle shot that shows a man in the cage, this shows that the man has no power and as he is in a cage further reiterate this. Also mise en scene in the teaser trailer creates a more hostile environment for the audience as when the seven people are on the roundabout and about to die their clothing is torn and full of blood. As a result this means that the teaser trailer looks a lot more realistic and therefore entices the audience to watch on. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T777zzhdElY

Slide 50:

The ‘Saw 6’ website was very reflective of the genre. This is because the colour scheme is black which has connotations of death and darkness and also another colour used is red which has connotations of death. As a result when the user looks at the website they will feel hostility and as this is what the website is trying to achieve this will make the website fit for purpose. This has shown me the importance in making sure the colour scheme is carefully thought of and the genre is reflective from the website. In addition the website is coherent. This is because the logo of Jigsaw, red circles, is on the homepage, teaser trailer and the poster. As a result this makes the film look consistent and when the audience look at the website they will be able to understand the film much better as the ancillary texts follow on from each other. This has shown me that I have to make the website coherent in order for people to find it easer to understand and make it user friendly. Also the website emphasises Jigsaw, as he is the person that is most popular from the films people will want to read about him and therefore this will keep the users on the website for a longer period. Also there are games on the website which will entice the audience to stay on the website for a lot longer period. Also the website for ‘Saw 6’ looks simple and had only the necessary aspects that it needed to be included. This because for all of the legal information that is required is only visible when the mouse is hovered over it. As a result the only thing that is visible is the aspects that are concerning the film and therefore when people visit the website it will feel more edgy as the effective aspects of the website is visible. As a result this has shown me ways I can make the website more effective as all of the unnecessary information such as the legal aspects of the film can be hidden unless the user wants to look at it. This will now make my website look more simple but effective which is what I want to gain. Furthermore the poster for ‘Saw 6’ is very effective. This is because the same colour scheme is used, black and red, as these colours have connotations danger and death this instantly implies to the audience that there will be death in the film. As this is a horror by emphasising this it will increase the amount of viewers for the film which is the aim of the poster. This has shown me that the poster that I create has to be simple, effective and have connotations of the genre of my teaser trailer.

Chronicles of Narnia :

Chronicles of Narnia The next teaser trailer that I watched was ‘Chronicles Of Narnia’. The first thing that I noticed was that there was a scene straight away and then there was the logo of the institution. This was the first time I saw this and therefore as it was so unique I thought that it was effective. As a result I would not have probably used this idea but now I may think of using a clip before the institution if it fits in with the teaser trailer that I create. Furthermore an interesting camera shot was a wide shot but underwater. As a result we could see from the perspective of under the ocean, however as it is a wide shot we see a vast amount of sea and therefore as in the middle there is a person this indicates to the audience that they are isolation and something bad is going to happen as they are not in control of what is going to happen. This has shown me a wide shot at the start can set the meaning for the rest of the teaser trailer. Another aspect that I liked about this teaser trailer was the over the shoulder shot. This shot showed the girl looking onto a ship in the ocean. As the little girl is obviously considerably smaller to the ship this shot shows the audience the size difference and therefore the audience automatically side with the little girl because not only is she the underdog to survive but also she is perceived to be an innocent girl. As a result this has shown me how the over the shoulder shot can be differed to show the audience a lot more and mean more. Finally a shot that I also liked and may consider using in the teaser trailer that I create is the two shot. In this teaser trailer there is a two shot which includes the little girl and a lion. This is a powerful image because as this is a unusual thing to occur it makes it more interesting and surprising. As this is what the teaser trailer is supposed to do then this means that the teaser trailer will be fit for purpose and this is the reason why I may decide to include this camera shot. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrJQDPpIK6I

Slide 52:

The next website that I watched was for the film called, ‘Chronicles of Narnia.’ On this website there was a news section for the film which I have not seen on any other film website. As a result this means that this website is unique which is beneficial for the film as people prefer to visit websites which are unusual. As a result this has shown me another way that I can make my website different which will make my website a lot better. Therefore I will consider adding a ‘news’ section in my website to look different to the others. Also the website is interactive and therefore makes the website a lot more enjoyable for the users. An example is how the websites allows people to ‘explore Narnia,’ as the target audience of this film is children by making the website interactive it will entice them to stay on the website for a lot longer. As a result this has shown me that the website that I create should be enjoyable and interactive and be suitable for my target audience. Thirdly the website gives the audience a lot of extra information that is not just about the film. An example of this is that it allows the user to buy all 7 books. As a result by promoting the books this is enticing the user to only to watch the film but also read the books. As a result this is widening their target audience as books are likened by all age ranges and therefore if people read the Narnia books this will entice them to watch the film. As a result this will increase the amount of people that watch the film. This has shown me that should try to entice all age ranges, however as there is not a book I will not be able to see this but I will have to think of another way. In addition the poster of this film is very effective an entices people to watch the film. This is done because the images used are interesting. For instance by having images of lions and polar bears this is entice their target audience, children, because the stereotypical child usual likes animals. As a result this will entice most children to watch the film which is what the aim of the poster is. Also the font of the film name is very good. This is because the font has flicked corners on the letters and therefore gives the idea to the audience that the film will be fantasy and mystical based. This has shown me the importance of designing the poster for the target audience and the importance the font can have as this can also have meaning.

Watchmen :

Watchmen This teaser trailer of ‘Watchmen’ has shown me how slow motion can be used to maximum effectiveness. In this teaser trailer slow motion is used at various times to show clearly what happened. However it also shows detail, such as the window smashing slowing, as a result as this is unusual and interesting to most people there is a greater probability that they will continue to watch the teaser trailer and therefore watch the film when it arrives in cinema. Also action moves are also in slow motion, this shows the fighting scenes in more detail but after the camera speeds up to make the scenes look more powerful, this is another great way to make the scenes more interesting which I will consider when I create my teaser trailer. Also narration in used in this teaser trailer to great effectiveness. For instance at one point it says ‘Everything We Know Will Change,’ as this is a remark that includes ‘we’ it implies that the audience is also involved and therefore this is a way to entice the viewers to watch on as they are part of the film and the film will affect them. As a result this has shown me the narration can influence the audience in many different ways if used effectively. Furthermore there is a variety of camera shots in this teaser trailer. For instance there are close ups to show facial expressions, long shots so the audience can see more , this is used when the man gets electrocuted. Also there is an extreme close up of fire, all of these camera shots shows the audience more of the film and makes it a lot more dramatic and therefore there is a greater chance that the audience will like it which is what the teaser trailer is trying to do. Finally when the logo of the institution appears, Warner Brothers, instead of the usual colours of orange it is blue. As a result the difference in colours portrays it is going to be a different and sinister film as the colour of dark blue has connotations of this. As a result this this has shown me that I should create the institution logo that coincides with the genre of my teaser trailer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3orQKBxiEg

Knight and Day :

Knight and Day The next teaser trailer that I watched was for the film called ‘Knight And Day. The genre of this was action comedy and this was visible to the audience through mise en scene. For instance to represent the action there were props used such as guns, also in the teaser trailer there was comedy through jokes and the way remarks were said. As a result if the viewers want to watch an action comedy this teaser trailer gives the impression that it fills all of the boxes. As a result this has shown me that in the teaser trailer I have to use mise en scene to make it clear what genre the teaser trailer is. Another aspect that I noticed is in the narration instead of saying that it starred Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz it said that it starred Cruise and Diaz. As this is a stereotypical way to address a special agent this gives the impression to the audience that these characters are special agents and this therefore sounds more realistic. As a result this has shown me that I can manipulate names to make the teaser trailer sound a lot more like the genre and this is what I will intend to do now. Finally I also noticed that when the camera was on Cameron Diaz the scenes were slow paced, however when it was showing Tom Cruise the scenes were fast paced. This shows me that Tom Cruise will be doing all of the action and also as he has a reputation for this it makes the viewers want to watch the full film. This has shown me that if there are two characters in my teaser trailer I should do something similar to make one character sound more unique. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAAYcts4GrM

Slide 55:

The next website that I liked was for the action comedy ‘Knight and Day,’ the first thing that I noticed was that the background was a scene of the film. Also it included comedy and action to entice the audience as this is a scene that is going to be liked by a lot of people. This has shown me that a good and effective way to entice the audience is to shown a scene of the film that will emphasise the genre and therefore increase the amount of viewers of the film which is the aim of the website. As a result I will consider this idea for my website. In addition where the categories are in each side of the screen there are silhouettes of Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. This gives a coherent feeling to the audience but as obviously the silhouettes are black it has connotations that maybe that they are hiding. As a result this has shown me that I should use connotations for the genre but also a silhouette of a character or a prop can also be interesting. The poster for the film is also very effective. The name of the film was deliberately called ‘Knight and Day’ as Knight will mean that the male will be a hero whereas you think that it means the time of day. This has shown me the importance of the name of the film. Also there are silhouettes of the two actors but this time in white. This is also a very effective way to entice the audience to watch the film as they will want to know why they are undercover. The final aspect that I liked was how the poster emphasised that they will be special agents as they used the stereotypical last name of the actors. As a result this informs the audience what there role will be and therefore this will entice the audience to watch the film as from the poster they will instantly know the genre and so if they want to see an action comedy they will watch this film as they will remember the name. This has shown me that I should make my poster clear and emphasise the genre.

The Island :

The Island From ‘The Island’ teaser trailer I noticed how the narration was used to show the audience the storyline, however the narration did not give to much away so the audience were still in suspense and had to guess. An example was ‘What If There Was A Place Where You Could Live Forever?' as a result this has shown me how if I include a narration in the teaser trailer that I can make the audience interact more with the teaser trailer. Another effective aspect of this teaser trailer it the way camera shots are used. For instance there was a pan shot, this was done to create a mystical feeling and show the audience that the character is disoriented. As this is a disequilibrium this has shown me that this shot is something that I should consider. Also an establishing wide shot is used to show the location, this is a island in the middle of the ocean. As a result this indicates that it is isolated and the people have nowhere to run. This has shown me that the location that I choose has to have a hidden meaning to make the teaser trailer look a lot more edgy. Finally another aspect of the location that I liked was there was a scene which was set in a plain white corridor. As a result this is a stereotypical setting of mental institution and therefore creates a hostile feeling for the audience as they are watching something that they are not used to. As a result this has further reiterated to me how colours in the setting make a difference and create meaning and therefore in all of the scenes that are in my teaser trailer I will make sure that there is an aspect that the audience are not used to seeing and is unique. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_nQUIOhRdM

Slide 57:

The website for this film was very intriguing as it allowed to user to ‘Visit The Island.’ I thought that this was a very good way to keep the user on the website for a longer time and by making the website more interactive this makes the website more enjoyable for the user. This has shown me that in order to keep the user on the website I have to make the website enjoyable and a good way to do this is to use aspects from the film. Also the website shows the ratings and reviews that institutions and magazines thought of it. One review was ‘entertaining thriller,’ as a result by the good ratings that are on the homepage the user will automatically think that he film is good and this will entice them to watch it. This has shown me that a good way to increase the viewers for the film and to entice the users to continue onto the website is to include the reviews but obviously make sure the reviews are excellent so the reactions of the user will want to watch the film. Also the poster of the film is very effective. I think this because the image is of the two characters running away. This gives the interpretation that they are escaping and therefore this makes the audience think that the film will be action packed and interesting. This has shown me that through the image and what the image shows it can entice the audience to watch the film if the image can be interpreted in different ways. As a result I will make sure that the image in my poster is interesting and entices the audience to watch the film. Finally another aspect that I like about the poster was how the slogan is simple but is very informative. This is because by the phrase ‘Plan Your Escape’ it gives the impression that they are on the run and as this is another great way that will entice the audience to watch the film. This has shown me the slogan that I use will have to entice my target audience to watch the film by the wording and the meaning of the phrase.

Hancock :

Hancock The ‘Hancock’ teaser trailer has also shown me how aspects in the teaser trailer can me changed in ways to make the teaser trailer unique. For instance the institution in the teaser trailer was Columbia, however unlike the usual way how it is followed by a scene, the camera zooms into the background of the institution logo and then the scene starts as they both include clouds. As a result this has shown me that in the teaser trailer I could be inventive to make the teaser trailer look more professional. Furthermore there is also a caption in the teaser trailer. This is ‘Then There's Hancock,’ as a result this makes the teaser trailer more memorable as a slogan is easily remembered by the viewers and therefore there is a higher chance that the audience will want to watch the full film when it is in the cinema. As a result this has shown me how effective a caption line can be and therefore I may consider using one in the teaser trailer that I create. Finally as this is a superhero film the director has to try to make the film look exuberant and therefore a camera shot that was regularly used was the tracking shot. As a result whenever Will Smith was flying in the air the camera would follow him. This therefore gave the audience the feeling that they were in the air and as the audience are now involved in the film this would entice them to watch on and watch the full film in the cinema. As a result this has shown me how the tracking shot can be used but as I will most likely not do a superhero film I will not be likely to use the tracking shot in the sky. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZQQgvhn4jg

Slide 59:

The ‘Hancock’ website was very effective. I think this because the website showed people what the film was about. This is because it was coherent throughout with the actual film. An example of this is in the film Will Smith is perceived to be a relaxed and lazy person and as in the homepage is showing Will Smith lying around this emphasises the character that he is. As a result this informs the users about the film as they will know the base of the film. This has shown me that by making a website coherent it entices the user to watch the film as they will already know more about it and be involved within the film and therefore I will make sure that my website is coherent aswell. Also as the main actor is the worldwide popular Will Smith they have purposely emphasised his name. As a result this increases the popularity of the film because as most people know who he is they will want to watch the film and therefore by emphasising his name this increases the viewers of the film which is the aim of the website. However as there will be no celebrities in my film I will not be able to do this but I will make sure there are aspects in my website that entice people to watch the film. The poster for ‘Hancock‘ is also coherent. This is because the image of Will Smith is him looking jagged and not the usual stereotypical look of a superhero. As a result as this is unique this entices people to watch the film as they have not seen a film like this. As a result this has shown me that the plot of the film should be unique to entice all of my target audience.

Collateral :

Collateral Firstly I noticed how the teaser trailer started as if it was a normal day in the USA. For instance we see Jamie Foxx acting as a taxi driver, the streets are quiet and he begins to drive normally. As a result the audience are relaxed, however when the action begins to start it is a surprise to the audience and therefore more effective. As a result this is based on Propp's theory of the disequilibrium. Therefore this is what I will make for the spine of the teaser trailer that I create. From the ‘Collateral’ teaser trailer mise en scene from the very beginning sets the story for the rest of the film. For instance as soon as we see Tom Cruise he is in a suit, knife and a gun, because of this mise en scene the audience know that he is capable of killing somebody. As a result this has shown me that mise en scene can indicate parts of the storyline quickly to the audience and therefore this will make the teaser trailer a lot more concise. Finally transitions create a lot of meaning in this teaser trailer as well. For instance when Tom Cruise is running on the bridge instead of showing him all the way there is a jump cut. As a result not only does this speed the scene up but it indicates to the audience that he is in a rush, maybe from running away from danger. As a result this has shown me transitions is a great way to involve the audience into the teaser trailer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPbG9uU7BiI

Slide 61:

‘Collateral’ has the genre action and this website outlined this in many different ways. An example of this was how the website started when it was loading to the homepage. On this website instead of the loading % bar it says, ‘It Started Like Any Other Night.’ As a result this instantly gives the impression to the audience that the film will have action involved in it. Therefore this sets the scene for the rest of the website so when the user clicks onto different pages of the website they will already know a little bit about the film. This has shown me how important a caption line can be and to make it useful and easier for the user to recognize the genre. Also the images used in the website makes it a lot easier for the user to distinguish the genre. This is because the images have connotations of the action genre. For instance there is a image of Tom Cruise in a suit holding a gun and a stern facial expression. As a result form the mise en scene this makes the user realise the genre which is helpful for them for when they are on the website. This has shown me that mise en scene is a great and easy way to portray the genre and therefore I will make sure that the mise en scene in my teaser trailer and ancillary texts are perfect and have connotations of the relevant genre. The poster for this film is also reflective of the genre though mise en scene. Also the image is the same as the websites so it is coherent. The mise en scene of this poster is the suit and the facial expression of Tom Cruise. As a result as this is a typical style of a person in a action film it shows the audience when they see the poster. Therefore if they want to see a action film and they realise that this film is a action film they will be drawn to this. This has shown me that the poster plays is big part on the success of the movie and a good way to make the poster effective is through the mise en scene.

Miami Vice :

Miami Vice The next teaser trailer that I watched was for the ’Miami Vice’ film. Throughout the film danger is emphasised. This is done in many different ways, for instance at the start the teaser trailer is very slow, however after 10 seconds there is a increase in cuts and the scenes become full of action. We hear the reload of guns and many explosions. Furthermore the scenes are set in night time to give the audience a sense of insecurity and more of an ambiguous feeling. As a result this has shown me different ways to involve the audience with my teaser trailer. In addition throughout the film there are long shots of speed boats in the day, however the ending is a long shot of a boat but at night time. This indicates to the audience that danger is looming and maybe that the two of them are running away and trying to be a disguise. As a result this has shown me the setting and time of day is a great way to involve the audience further and make them think more about the film. Finally the last scene of the teaser trailer is of Jamie Foxx and Tom Cruise. However mise en scene is used to maximum effectiveness. This is because the two of them are wearing black clothes and shades. This indicates that they are on the run and trying to be hidden. As a result by this being at the end it makes the audience curious and think why, this will then entice them to watch the film. As a result this has shown me that mise en scene is a great way to improve meaning in the teaser trailer and entice them to watch the full film. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_DpRUzA1Z0&feature=related

Slide 63:

The next website I searched for was for the film ‘Miami Vice’. However I could not find an official website for it that was strictly for that one particular film. However Universal Studios had a section of their website related to the film so I think that this is their designated website. This was very blank and it gave the basic information about the film and therefore I thought that this was very weak from a promotional point of view and from an informative point of view. For instance it only stated the synopsis of the film and the cast, directors and run time. As a result I think that this film could have enticed a lot more people if the website will a lot more interactive and eye-catching. This has shown me a clear difference from a very good website to a basic one. Therefore I will try to make mine as enjoyable as possible for the user. However the poster of this film is very effective and has a lot of meaning. For instance the mise en scene in the poster shows the audience what type of film it is. By Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell holding guns in their hand it gives the impression that they are capable of killing people so the film will have a lot of action. Also there clothing is very simple and not too flash which indicates to the audience that they are not going to kill a lot of people and maybe looking for revenge. As a result through mise en scene the audience can clearly see the genre of the film and what the film will be like. This has shown me the importance of mise en scene in the poster which can be very informative to the audience. Finally the colour of the poster is blue. As the colour blue has connotations if relaxation and coolness this gives the impression that the two of them will be killing clinically and not be killing a lot of people. Also the slogan, ‘No Law No Order’ also emphasises the point that there will be killing people and as this interprets the genre of action when people see this poster this will draw them to watching the film if they want to watch a action film.

Saw 7 – Saw 3D :

Saw 7 – Saw 3D The first thing that I noticed in this teaser trailer was how the institution name of the film was ‘Twisted Pictures.’ As this is at the very beginning this instantly sets the scene for the rest of the teaser trailer and therefore this indicates to the audience that the film will be horrific. As the genre of the film is horror this is exactly what the audience want to see. This has shown me the name of the institution is also important and can be effective. In addition the narration is also used to create more horror. In the narration Jigsaw is referred to a master and a genius. As a result this implies to the audience that he is not a villain and therefore that it is good what he does. As a result this shows the audience that in this new film there will be more of the same. As a result this is what the audience will be expecting and therefore this will increase the amount of viewers of the film when it arrives in cinema. Also in this teaser trailer it is very dark. As a horror genre has connotations of being dark this had to be included because if it was not then this teaser trailer would not have had the same feeling as the other horror films. As a result this would most probably draw people away from watching the film. However as it is very dark there is an uncertainty for the audience as they do not know what's coming up as it is very unclear. This has shown me that in order to make a teaser trailer very ambiguous by darkening the scene will improve the effectiveness of the teaser trailer. Finally at the end of this teaser trailer it says that the film is in 3D, as the aim is to revive the cinema for many directors and this is the way by emphasizing the 3D aspect of the film it will definitely increase the viewers. As a result this has shown me that 3D is a fantastic way to increase the amount of viewers for the film. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zg0go2b3ekY

Slide 65:

The ‘Saw 7’ website was simple but very effective as it included all of the necessary points. An aspect that I liked was how the homepage included the other ‘Saw’ websites. As this is a horror film and the websites of the other ‘Saw’ films are gory named or have reference to something hostile sounding such as www.houseofjigsaw.com, it creates a more edgy feeling when you are on the website. As a result the user will recognise what the film is all about and if they want to see a horror they will know that this film is horrific. This has shown me that a good way to emphasise the genre is to have a edgy sounding website name. Another aspect that I liked was how the website was simple but still very effective as it created the feeling that it was a horror film. This is done as the colour scheme is mainly black and the colour of the heart that pumps when you move the mouse is also black. As a result when the user visits the website they feel that the film will also be very dark. As a result the website clearly interprets the genre of the film and this has shown me the importance of making the genre of the film clear for the audience. For the ‘Saw 7’ film there were two posters designed. They were very different, for instance one was emphasising the 3D aspects of the film but the other was emphasising the horror. Also the 3D poster was white and the other was black. However in both there was still a element of edginess as the 3D poster you could see an eye which looked revolting. The other poster you could see two knives. As a result this has shown me that the poster has to show the genre of the film to promote the film correctly and to inform the audience more about the film.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed – Video Game :

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed – Video Game The next teaser trailer that I watched was for a video game. The teaser trailer was for ‘Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.’ the opening scene in this was something that I liked, it was an establishing wide shot of a build up city but then slowly we see a spaceship appearing from the top of our screen. As result as we were not expecting this this makes it more dramatic and memorable. As the target audience for this is children and the first scene includes a spaceship this also entices them to watch on as this has captured their imagination. This has shown me that the teaser trailer that I create has to reflect what my target audience want to see. In addition mise en scene is used. The most obvious forms of mise en scene is the light saber which has become a selling point for the ‘Star Wars’ films and the black cloak. By using the bright red light saber and the black cloak this intrigues the target audience as the light saber is what is so iconic about ‘Star Wars’. As a result this is another method to entice people to continue to watch on. This has shown me that mise en scene can be used in many different ways. Finally an interesting aspect was the long take, in total it was 39 seconds long and it was of the spaceship losing control. However as the spaceship is falling we see a person that we believe will get killed but due to his powers is able to stop the spaceship. After this scene the speed of the teaser trailer increase and all of the action fighting starts. As a result this has shown me that the long take can be used to make the next scene look a lot more adventurous and therefore I may consider using a long take at the beginning of my teaser trailer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkBiYpD3SDc

Slide 67:

The next website I went on was for the video game called, ‘Star Wars The Force Unleashed.’ From this website I learnt a lot of new key aspect that I will consider for the website that I create. This website was very good as it allowed users to interact with other people under the ’community’ page. As a result as this means that people can actually chat on the website they will spend a long time on the website. As a result this will mean that the users will most likely want to watch the film and therefore this will increase the amount of viewers the films have. This has shown me that in order for my website to be effective I should make the website interactive. Also as this is a video game website it had to be emphasised the platforms that the game was on so the people on the website would know if it was possible for them to buy. As a result at the bottom of the website it has images of the platforms that the game is available. This has shown me that the website that I create has to maximise the target audience and be clear so then this will maximise the total viewers on the website. The poster for this game was also very effective. This is because as the target audience is children, the poster has used vibrant colours an also the characters is looking eccentric. As this is a fantastic way to entice children as this is what they like at their age this will entice them to play the game. As a result this has shown me that the poster that I create has to be fit for purpose and perfect for my target audience.

Avatar :

Avatar When the man in the wheelchair arrives off the spaceship there is a midshot of him, this midshot is also a low angle shot and there is a clear rule of thirds. This camera shot tells a lot of information, for instance he has a lot of power despite him being in a wheelchair, and also the rule of thirds shot shows his location. For instance to the left of him there is a robot and to his right there are tanks. As a result this has shown me how the rule of thirds shot can be used to tell the audience the location in a quick shot. Also as ‘Avatar’ is a unique film and has the genre of an action adventure in the teaser trailer there are many shots that show the location. Another camera shot was is the wide shot, in this shot we see the mountains in mid-air, as this is not normal and impossible when the audience see this they are enthralled and enticed to watch on. As a result this has shown me how the location of the teaser trailer is pivotal. Finally there is also a pan shot when the man in the wheelchair sees the ‘Avatar’. This indicates to the audience that he cannot believe what he is seeing and that he is confused. As a result this has shown me that when there is a disequilibrium in the teaser trailer that I create the pan shot can be used to add meaning. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1_JBMrrYw8

Slide 69:

The next website I visited was for the action adventure blockbuster film ‘Avatar’. The first aspect that I liked was how it involved the user as the website was very interactive. An example of this is the section where you can ‘Visit Pandora,’ as a result this will entice people to click onto this as they will be curious. As a result this has shown me the importance of making the website interesting and enjoyable for the user as then the user will spend a longer time on the website which is what the website is aiming to do. Another aspect that I liked of this website was how it promoted a charity. As a result this gave the impression to the user that the film is morally correct and therefore this would also increase the popularity of the film. In the long term this will also increase the viewers of the film, this has shown me that a great way to increase the popularity of the film is to promote a charity in some way which will benefit society and increase the films reputation. As a result I will make sure that I promote some sort of charity on the website that I create. However a negative of the website of ‘Avatar’ is that there are a considerable amounts of images and videos on the website. As a result if somebody ha a slow computer then this will slow the loading process down considerably and therefore this will draw them away. As a result this will mean that the website will not be targeting a wide audience. This has shown me that I will have to create a website that is not too complex and quick to load. The poster for the blockbuster film ‘Avatar’ was very effective. I think this because the poster shows the different from the human and the ‘Avatar’ on the sides of the poster and then the location in the middle. As a result as this is unusual and unique the audience can see the difference between the normal world and the world called Pandora. As a result they will be curious and enticed to watch the film and therefore the poster will be doing its job. Also bright colours are used so the poster is eye catching and therefore more people will see the poster and this will increase the viewers for the film. This has shown me I should make the poster eye-catching and unique to maximise the effectiveness of the poster.

Slide 70:

Aswell as watching these teaser trailers I thought to conduct extensive research I should look at some more. As result I also looked 15 more, as a result altogether I watched and analysed over 50 teaser trailers. Transformers 2 Revenge of the Fallen - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=maPFhlFfJG8 Angels & Demons - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASVeN-58HKk I'm Still Here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2spHiYOORc Skyline - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDJfue-Aanw Halo 3 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCsdPszJLNQ The Strangers - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HMd59MaBWI Snakes on a Plane - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hETGi5ywalo Pirates of the Caribbean 2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuH1tbEq0r8 The Pink Panther 2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oM72mnQmPSo The Abandoned - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnLrJy3hYLI Clash of the Titans - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcBNHZEiX0g 22 weeks - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8RK312hKyA Shrek 4 Ever After - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIlv9OgRnTM The Knowing - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikJ3t_tZf-E Super 8 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpzUCA5i6zY In conclusion from my research of teaser trailers, websites and posters I have learnt a lot of new and important information. For instance I learnt that coherence is key in the teaser trailers and the ancillary texts. Also I should make the website enjoyable and fun to use and a good way to do this is to make it interactive. Finally for the poster I have to make sure that it is eye-catching and vibrant so it is easy for passer bys to see. As a result all of this research will benefit me in the future for when I create the texts as it will be more professional and effective.
