Project Ice: 

Project Ice Blackie School 2007

Goal:: 

Goal: To provide a specialized academic-based hockey development program for students in Grade 6, 7, and 8 operating out of Blackie School and the Blackie Arena.

Recommendation: Open Ice Summit 1999: 

Recommendation: Open Ice Summit 1999 At the 1999 Molson Ice Summit, 11 recommendations for player development improvement were identified for the future of Canadian hockey. Recommendation #10 stated: 'Promote cooperative efforts between boards, local hockey associations and sponsors, to utilize ice times and school facilities and move towards the development of sport schools.' (Hockey Canada, 2002.)

Hockey Canada Skills Academy: 

Hockey Canada Skills Academy Approval pending, Blackie School has applied to become a Hockey Canada Skills Academy in Sept. 2007. A hockey academy allows young hockey players to engage in hockey training during school hours. This program is designed to compliment or enhance the skill development opportunities within the current Hockey Canada Branches and their minor associations. This partners with the school system to support individual skill development and academic achievement.

Objectives Regulation time…: 

Objectives Regulation time… Regular academic programming in accordance with Alberta Education. Instructional ice time three times per week, and 1 hour of classroom instruction from a certified teacher / coach based on Hockey Canada skills programs. Additional training in nutrition, strength and agility training, and hockey-related dry land training in a classroom / gymnasium setting. Hockey AB refereeing course Develop an understanding of minor hockey systems and their operation. Parent education to support hockey endeavors. Application of enhanced training, hockey knowledge to respective minor hockey teams and organizations

Considerations… “Overtime”: 

Considerations… 'Overtime' Program is a Foothills based program with Blackie students having priority A limit on students accepted into the program. Players entering the program must be registered with a minor hockey program within the province. Student imports have all the privileges of Blackie resident students with regard to athletic programs and extra-curricular programming and will be encouraged to participate in these activities as part of their educational experience. Resource people (Hockey Alberta, Hockey Canada, WHL, NHL)

“ The Shootout” : 

' The Shootout' Tuition- The tuition for all students will be based on ice rental and minimal expenses incurred by the program. (Approximately $500.00) The hockey program is eligible for the Federal Children’s Fitness Tax Credit. Any extra costs associated with transportation will be the responsibility of the parent. Information night Monday, May 7th at Blackie School. Presentation of program and questions
