A programmable logic controller is defined as a specialized computer that is used to control machines and process and it functions by the use of a programmable memory to store instructions and specific functions that include counting timing on/off control arithmetic sequencing and data handling. Programmable logic controllers were first introduced in the late 160s to offer the same basic functions as existing logic relay systems. The impetus for their development was driven by the fact that traditional hardwired panels were time consuming to wire debugging and change. Advantages Programmable Logic Controller Faster Response Time- PLCs are most applicable in machines that process multiple items in a given second and objects hat spend little time close to a fraction of a second in front of sensors. PLCs give systems quick response ability because they operate in real time and every event in the field will quickly be resolved because it quickly detected. PLCs also have in-built diagnostic and override abilities which allow users to trace and correct software and hardware problems and the control program can be watched in real time as it operates to find and fix problems. Flexibility and reliability- PLCs allow end users to modify the field thus it makes it easier to create and change a program than to wire and rewire a circuit. Original manufacturers of equipment are able to provide system updates for a process by just sending out a new program. Once a program has been written and tested it can be downloaded to other PLCs. The system is more reliable because Programmable Logic Controller by storing all the logic in its memory and once the logic is contained in the memory there is no chance of logic errors happening. Cost effectiveness- Programmable logic controllers were initially designed to replace relay control logic because it is more cost effective to use PLCs than relay control. Generally it is more cost effective to install a PLC if an application requires more than 6 control relays. PLCs

The program replaces much of the external wiring that would be required for the control of a process. Communications- Programmable logic controllers can be networked to perform various functions which include supervision control data collection monitoring devices and process parameters and uploading and downloading of programs. Thus the program is capable of communicating with computer equipment or other controllers. An open architecture design allows most PLCS to be easily connected to programs and devices made by other different manufacturers.
