WIRHE – A strategy plan for wireless solutions in healthcare:

WIRHE – A strategy plan for wireless solutions in healthcare Prestudy-plan for Tekes Esko Alasaarela, Dr Tech, Docent University of Oulu, Department of Electrical and Information Engineering

Starting point for WIRHE:

Starting point for WIRHE The optimization of the healthcare processes cannot be done until it is possible to get real-time information from the processes. In Europe (and especially in Finland) there is a boom of developing mobile solutions for personal health monitoring. Wireless Sensor Network solutions and components are breaking into market (Berkeley motes etc.) The worldwide need of wireless technologies (also Far-East) rising from the cost crisis of the healthcare sector and emerging of the new age of wellness issues. The progress in developing ubiquitous technology and ubiquitous healthcare initiatives. Concluding the background: It is the right time to plan a robust strategy and road-map for the Wireless Healthcare technology and business which would be followed both in Finland and other participating countries as a part of the European and/or global market. The wireless sensors and wireless positioning and tracking solutions (tracking of people, information, equipment, goods, drugs and material) will change drastically the healthcare industry worldwide

Objectives of the prestudy:

Objectives of the prestudy To collect and combine information from many sources To highlight the key points of wireless healthcare strategy To plan the strategy road mapping project To open discussion with the top level experts in the world The main goal of this pre-study is to prepare a proposal of a strategy planning and road mapping project for wireless healthcare technology and business in European and global market. The content will consist of a framework for building vision, preliminary objectives and strategic steps, an analysis of technologies needed, collection of current and planned applications and solutions and an analysis of the best NOEs in the world in this area.

Framework:

Framework Framework of the pre-study Tekes, in Finland, is funding this work by two week man-power including one week travel to Berkeley. Tekes has established a Theme Group of Wireless Solutions in the Finnish FinnWell technology program, who will take the responsibility of this road-mapping work. Dr., Docent Esko Alasaarela, University of Oulu, is executing the pre-study and is one of the board-members of the Theme Group of Wireless Solutions. Expected deliverables The pre-study produces a state-of-the-art-report of about 10 pages concerning technologies, applications and solutions used or to-be-used in the hospitals and healthcare. Plan for strategy planning and road-mapping project.

Wireless Healthcare Strategy highlights:

Wireless Healthcare Strategy highlights Some of the questions Vision elements? Hospital processes enhanced by wireless technology Mobile healthcare services available Wireless ad hoc networks coming to healthcare applications Technologies needed for reaching vision? Applications Strategic mind-set in wireless healthcare technology and business Statements for successful strategy plan and implementation How to measure success? Networks of excellence? Conducted from US Conducted from Finland

Elements of vision and roadmap:

Elements of vision and roadmap

Elements of vision and roadmap:

Elements of vision and roadmap 1. Health processes enhanced by wireless technology 2. Locating and tracking of people, information, equipment and goods 3. Integration of different software and hardware applications on the unified platform supported by wireless technology 4. Collection of vital parameters from patients by wireless sensors (human monitoring) 6. Ubi-health services available for self-diagnostics and self-care applications (diabetes etc.) 7. User-friendly integration of mobile devices and services to the last meter wireles body area network (Bluetooth, ZigBee, Ultrawideband, etc.) 11. Ad hoc wireless sensor networks for ubiquitous healthcare applications

How to measure success in developing healthcare?:

How to measure success in developing healthcare? New methods needed To measure improvements on healthcare services (quality, efficiency, economy, security) To measure success in turning product and service development into business To measure technological and scientific innovativeness and vision

Networks of excellence:

Networks of excellence Some of them FinnWell-program, Theme group of Wireless Solutions in Healthcare, Finland HealthTech (Health Technology Center), CA USA CITRIS, UC Berkeley, CA USA Center for Health Management Research (CHMR), USA Wilho consortium, Oulu Finland Eureopean-Wilho consortium

Next steps (tentatively):

Next steps (tentatively) In 2006 Wireless solutions presentation in FinnWell-seminar in Helsinki in June 2006. A workshop of wireless healthcare solutions joined to CITRIS Europe Meeting in Helsinki in June 2006. An international brainstorming session on wireless healthcare solutions collecting participants from US, UK, South-Korea and Finland in Helsinki in September 2006. Some of the further milestones in the road-map Convergence-workshop with CTOs from healthcare institutions, healthcare management experts, technology providers and key experts from service science, March-April 2007, in one of the Northern Finland Skiing Centers (?). EU-Wilho-research as an EU-FP7-IP?
