Sea Lions: Sea Lions By Kimberly, Mayra and Lizbeth
Sea Lions: Sea Lions It is hard to believe, but California sea lions have a very loud roar, which sounds like a dog barking! They use their bark to communicate with each other and also to scare other animals away.
Sea Lions: Sea Lions There is so much more to learn about California sea lions. In our power point presentation, you will find out more about what California sea lions look like, their habitat, what California sea lions like to eat, how they care for their pups, and also some interesting and amazing facts about California sea lions.
Sea Lions: Sea Lions Have you ever seen a California sea lion? California sea lions look like seals. They are in a group of mammals called pinnipeds. The word pinniped means fin footed.
Sea Lions: Sea Lions Pinnipeds don’t have arms and legs. They have four flippers. California sea lions have two long front flippers and two shorter back flippers .
Sea Lions: Sea Lions Sea lions can’t breathe underwater. They have to swim up to the surface of the water to breathe air. Their body is smooth and rounded. This helps them to swim fast.
Habitat : Habitat Do you realize that most California sea lions live in North America along the shore of the Pacific Ocean? California sea lions are found along the Pacific Coast from southern Mexico up to British Columbia, Canada.
Prey: Prey Have you ever wondered what California sea lions eat? A California sea lion’s prey is fish and squid. They must swim to find food. Sea lions use their sharp teeth to bite into their prey.
Pups: Pups Have you ever seen a new California sea lion pup? The pup is 3 feet long and weighs 35 pounds. Pups are born in an area called a rookery. The rookeries are on small islands.
Cows and Pups: Cows and Pups The mother sea lion is called a cow. She has one baby at a time. When a pup is one week old the mother leaves. She leaves to hunt. When pups are born they have soft fur on their backs but they don’t have fur on their flippers.
Slide11: When pups play it looks like arguing. A pup learns to swim by watching its mother swim. When they are six weeks old they can swim well.
Slide12: Pups can’t stay in the water for a long time because their blubber is too thin to keep them warm.
Slide13: California sea lions have one baby a year. Most California sea lion pups grow up in the same rookery where their mother was born. A pup stays with its mother until they are one year old. When their mothers are away pups sleep a lot. They drink milk from their mother. But when the pup is six months old it can catch its own food.
Slide14: When the pup is about one year old it leaves its mother and lives on its own.
Enemies: Enemies You’ll be shocked to learn that animals that live on land do not hunt California sea lions. But they are hunted by animals that live in the water. Sharks and Killer whales hunt sea lions while they are swimming.
Dangers to Sea Lions : Dangers to Sea Lions Many people use fishing nets to catch fish. Young sea lions often play with the fishing nets. Sometimes part of the fishing net gets stuck around a young sea lion’s neck. As the sea lion grows, the net becomes tighter .
Slide17: The net may tear off, or the sea lion may be able to rub it against a rock. But if the net stays on it begins to cut into the sea lion’s skin.
Slide18: Some people put noisemakers on their fishing nets. The noisemakers scare the sea lions. So sea lions don’t play with nets that have noisemakers.
Laws: Laws The United States has laws to protect California Sea Lions.
