It was dominated by Carlo V, always accompanied by his advisor. At that time many people set themselves up as bankers. One of the most important was Tommaso Marino, an arrogant and overbearing man who thought that he could have everything, thanks to his money.: In 1500 the capital of the duchy of Milan was considered the richest city in Italy. Slide3: One day he saw a beautiful young woman coming out of the church of San Fedele and immediately fell in love with her. Slide4: TOMMASO: Do you know that young lady who just walked in front of the church? MAN: Certainly, she is his Excellency’s daughter and her name is Ara. TOMMASO: She is just the young lady I have been looking forSlide5: TOMMASO: Good day Ara, would you like me to accompany you to your castle? I should like to speak to you along the way and you must call me Tommaso. ARA : Very well, please speak. TOMMASO: Dear Ara, you are the emperor’s daughter and this is my request: will you marry me? ARA : I am sorry, Tommaso, but that I cannot. TOMMASO: Well, if you do not wish to, I will go to your father and demand an explanation. ARA: Very well, please come into the castle. Slide6: TOMMASO: Good day, your Excellency. I am Tommaso and today I have become acquainted with your daughter Ara. I have asked her to marry me but she has refused me, how can that be? EMPEROR : My daughter will only marry a man who can offer her a palace worthy of comparison with the most splendid palaces of Venice, I fear, Tommaso. Slide7: At this point the banker had a wonderful palace built. TOMMASO : Greetings Emperor, do you like this palace? If your daughter will marry me it will be her home. EMPEROR: Certainly, ring ring…Hello Ara, let me introduce you to Tommaso who is going to become your husband. ARA: It’s a pleasure to meet you. TOMMASO: The pleasure is all mine. Ara and Tommaso married and went to live in the new palace. It is said however that the palace was under a curse placed on it by a mysterious prophet, the king’s advisorSlide8: THIS HEAP OF STONES BUILT WITH THE FRUITS OF MANY ROBBERIES WILL FALL INTO RUIN, BE STOLEN OR BURN.
