I. The East African Crisis: AIDS EPIDEMIC

“AIDS, Statistics: Tue Nov 21 2006 :

“AIDS, Statistics: Tue Nov 21 2006 Nearly 45 million people are living with the HIV virus around the globe in 2006, the World Health Organisation and UNAids said. Two thirds of those infected - 24.7 million people - live in sub-Saharan Africa and the region also accounts for almost 75 per cent of deaths - 2.1 million out of the global toll of 2.9 million in 2006.” http://scienceoftheinvisible.blogspot.com/search/label/HIV%2FAIDS http://www.avert.org/worldstats.htm

Sifiso of South Africa: :

Sifiso of South Africa: “A large part of many African countries are rural with no medical facilities nearby, so there are a large number of people who are living and have died of AIDS that nobody knows about, (thus not a statistic). Because of cultural customs, some Africans go to traditional healers when they get sick as a result of being HIV positive and never get proper treatment because of a distrust of western medicine.”

How is AIDS spread? :

How is AIDS spread? It spreads through the various superstitions and lack of training. The educational campaigns targeted at youth don't seem to be working because the highest rates of infection are among the youth (Sifiso) Superstition: male healed of AIDS if have “sex with a virgin” theory. This superstition alone is one cause for sexual abuse that spreads AIDS The middle class to high class section of the population see AIDS as a poor man's disease and in South Africa the infection rates of the middle to higher class is growing. (Sifiso) Example: “…Veronica was raped, and infected with HIV, in an AIDS cleansing ritual in western Kenya. Veronica's baby, yet unnamed, will be affected by AIDS her entire life.” http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2000/aids/stories/women.children/

Problem of Poverty: :

Problem of Poverty: 1. Widows and Grandma’s raising too many children. Many have no room to sleep in the home so they have to find a place outdoors to sleep at night. No money for school so there is no-way out of the poverty. 2. The Child Parent situation is usually a girl raising her younger sisters as no living relative wants them, so they are with out hope. We can not imagine the lives they live. 3. Children face a double threat AIDS in Africa touches children in two ways -- as a disease that kills their parents, leaving them orphans, and as a disease that infects children themselves. Whole families die due to AIDS, parents and the children.

He and the other ministers are working with little ability among the war torn, famine, floods, but the largest problem is the loss of people to AIDS. The problem is they have little resources to work with.
