BICYCLE FORKS STURCTURE PROPERTY PROCESSING -Are they interrelated

INTRODUCTION:

INTRODUCTION What is a bicycle fork -In simplest words, it is fork shaped machine consisting of two arms and a crown that holds the front wheel of a bicycle. Objective – To analyze interconnected structure, property and processing relationship for minimizing cost and maimizing performance.

STRUCTURE:

STRUCTURE Let us analyze the structure of a bicycle fork and key loading areas. There are two basic loads on fork- The reaction load from ground which generates axial load and bending load. The torsion load due to rotating motion of handle. Bending moment is the severest load and highest at the top of crown of fork.

PROPERTIES:

PROPERTIES The structure described posses highest stress because of bending. As a result it needs to posses high flexural rigidity. Thus a hollow cross section is taken to allow high rigidity with minimum mass. Minimum mass criteria will account for cost. Also being subjected to fluctuating stress , it needs to possess energy absorption capacity on account of sufficient flexibility. So fork design is constrained by strength and strength.

PROCESSING:

PROCESSING We noted that crown needs to be hollow, however the arms of fork may be made solid or hollow. High performance fork’s crowns are made from a billet of steel. It is heated to 1000 deg. C or more to pierce a hole. The diameter of this hole is further increased by hot rolling and then cold drawing. Crown can also be made by forming a sheet into tube and welding along its length. Fork arms are generally casted and then welded with crown.

CONCLUSION:

CONCLUSION We saw structure of forks and analyzed loadings on it. Accordingly few key properties were identified which helped to lay down general shape and design. With those designs, we selected the suitable processing techniques to manufacture the bicycle fork. Thus structure, property and processing are all linked to one another. This ideology is applicable on all objects that are manufactured.
