NORTH ATLANTIC OSCILLATION IMPACT ON PRIMARY PRODUCTIVITY IN THE COASTAL MOROCCAN UPWELLING Soukaina ZIZAH* Francis Marsac** *Institut National de Recherche Halieutique 2, Rue Tiznit Casablanca, Morocco ** IRD, Montpellier France

OBJECTIVES:

OBJECTIVES NAO influence on SSTs in the Moroccan Atlantic Region Comparison between my in-situ SSTs and Climlab2000 SSTs Correlation of Climlab2000 SSTs and Fish Landings

DATA & METHODS:

DATA & METHODS In situ Data 1994, 1995 and 1997 cruises (Jan-Feb) : SST, Phosphates, Surface Chlorophyll’a’ NAO index (climlab2000), Wind velocity+direction(NCEP/NCAR), Upwelling Index (+Upwelling; - Downwelling) Sardine and Anchovy Catches 1983-1998 averaged by two areas 1. Central Stock 2. Southern Stock(C) INRH Statistics Spawning Stock Biomass 1983-1995(FAO) ADAPT Recruitment Index 1983-1995(FAO) ADAPT GAM

CONCLUSION:

CONCLUSION Obvious effect of NAO on Dynamics of coastal upwelling 1997 ‘near normal’ year vs NAO and 1994 the coldest in terms of SSTs but mainly in the northern region (most sensitive to NAO effect) Upwelling intensity and chlorophyll concentration higher in 1994 and 1995 Primary production is more sensitive to climate forcing during winter NCEP/NCAR SST low resolution to detect ‘real’ SST and thus upwelling areas No obvious relationship on fisheries landings data, (inappropriate environmental dataset) Use SSt Satellite data to detect the structure of coastal upwelling A continuous coastal station => SST monitoring
