Heart Gallery Mentor Program Making a difference, one child at a time

IMAGINE : 

IMAGINE Being 6 years old and having your best years behind you Having a brown paper bag and 20 minutes to pack your belongings so you can move to your new home Being 10 and having only a 10% chance of having a forever family Your skin is considered the “wrong” color What it must be like when “mom” is not a safe word Turning 18, being on the front steps of your old home and wondering where to go Graduating or getting married and not having anyone to walk you down the aisle IMAGINE HOW YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. ONE FACE, ONE VOICE, ONE LIFE, AT A TIME!

The mentors working with A Family for Every Child/Heart Gallery are men and women from all walks of life who have dedicated a portion of their time every month to enrich the lives of youth in foster care in their community. MENTOR What exactly is a mentor?

Almost 14,000 children spent at least one day in foster care in 2008. On any given day 8,775 Oregon children are in foster care. : 

During 2008, DHS received more than 65,400 reports of child abuse and neglect. One report every 8 minutes. Of those, 10, 421 Oregon children were victims, with over half younger then 6 years old. www.oregon.gov/DHS/abuse/publications/children/index.shtml Almost 14,000 children spent at least one day in foster care in 2008. Young people who have a mentor are: *46% less likely to start using drugs *27% less likely to start drinking *1/3 less likely to hit someone *Skipped half as many days at school, and felt better about their ability to do well resulting in higher grades *Reported more positive relationships with their peers Studies also show: Mentoring has helped young people build academic achievement, Increase self-esteem, gain knowledge about jobs and opportunities, Discover strengths and skills and build on them, gain self-respect through recognition and acquisition of new skills, Believe in themselves, Trust in themselves to make good choices and to feel as though they Belong.

We believe the mentoring relationships Provide stable emotional support, increase self-efficacy And expose foster youth to new cultures and experiences, Thus broadening their vision of “what could be” in their lives.
