It’s said that everyone should read this book before they die. It is Harper Lee’s only published novel which has won numerous awards. Characterization of Scout : Characterization of Scout Scout is a brave six year old tomboy. She dislikes school due to her teacher, but enjoys reading with her father. She always voices her opinion, which usually gets her into trouble. Throughout the novel she matures even though she is still a child. Her father teaches her how important it is to not judge others before you get to know them. Characterization of Atticus : Characterization of Atticus Atticus is a lawyer. He is a tall, middle aged man with glasses. He is Scout and Jem’s father. His wife died two years after Scout was born. He has a sister named Alexandra and a brother named Jack. He is well known to others in his community. When he has free time, he enjoys spending it with his children. He is not a strict parent, but he does expect his children to make the right choices. Significance of the Setting : Significance of the Setting To Kill A Mockingbird is set in the 1930’s in the town of Maycomb, Alabama. The people in the town know everything about everyone. There are family reputations because the same people have always lived there. Most of the town is racist, and the whites are always separated from the blacks. Climax of the Novel : Climax of the Novel Tom Robinson, an honest church going man, is accused of raping a white woman due to his skin color. Atticus decides to take on this trial, because he knows Tom is innocent. This part of the novel is most suspenseful because of the uncertainty of the verdict. In the end, Tom is sentenced to be guilty. Resolution of the Plot : Resolution of the Plot Scout learns that all people should be treated equally. Not one person is better than another. She also realizes that you can’t suspect how someone will act from their outside appearance. You must get to know them before you make a judgment upon them. Symbolism of Mockingbird : Symbolism of Mockingbird The mockingbird symbolized Boo Radley and Tom Robinson. The mockingbirds don’t harm others, and they are innocent. The mockingbird represents innocence and kindness. It’s a shame they were treated so unfairly. Relevance of Historical Context of the Novel : Relevance of Historical Context of the Novel This novel portrays racism precisely how it was in the 1930’s. This book was very realistic and showed the ways African Americans were treated at this time. Racism still exists worldwide to this day. Theme of the Novel : Theme of the Novel The theme is racism and judgment of others. This novel proves that you shouldn’t judge someone before you get to know them. The town is against blacks. For example, the Tom Robinson case. He is innocent, but he is sentenced to be guilty due to his skin color. Another example, is Boo Radley. He is suspected to be scary, so therefore the children are frightened of him even though they haven’t met him. Toward the end of the novel Scout and Jem become more acceptable of people regardless of their race. Conclusion : Conclusion The novel shows how racism can affect other people. I feel this book portrays the prejudice that existed in the South. The community was affected due to the racism and unfair treatment of African Americans. This book shows different ways you can be judged due to racism.
