Slide 3: United Indians 2007 What are the Four Ways? Slide 4: United Indians 2007 Assimilation – surrendering identity, history, culture, spiritual beliefs and lifestyle to become part of the homogenous mass Assimilation has resulted in most Indigenous people losing their land and remaining marginalized and disenfranchised. Slide 5: United Indians 2007 2. Resignation – accepting powerlessness, poverty, victimization, sickness and despair as Indigenous people’s destiny. Resignation has resulted in alcoholism, drug addiction, suicide, internalized oppressions and defeatism. Slide 6: United Indians 2007 3. Resistance – either armed or nonviolent struggles to defend lands, families and lives, and win concessions from governments and other institutions. Resistance has had limited success in achieving goals while at the same time fostering ill will from the mainstream. Slide 7: United Indians 2007 In contrast, The Fourth Way utilizes empowerment and constructive development to create Indigenous and related social movements to improve education, health care, infrastructure and economic development, and allow true participation by Indigenous people to rebuild the torn nations of the Americas. Slide 8: United Indians 2007 Where did the concept of the Fourth Way originate? Ancient Prophesies from around the world have foretold of this time. Slide 9: United Indians 2007 These Ancient Prophecies include “The Reunion of the Condor and the Eagle”, “The Time of the Eighth Council Fire”, “The Return of the White Buffalo”, “The Emergence of the Fourth World and “Black Elk’s Daybreak Star Prophesy”. These Prophecies view the Human Family as the Children of one Mother and one Father nourished and shaded by the Same Sacred Tree of Life. Slide 10: United Indians 2007 The Ancient Prophesy, “The Reunion of the Condor and Eagle”, foretells that the Americas will be reunited in a mutual supportive network that will evolve into a new state of consciousness that involves all members of the Human Family. Slide 11: United Indians 2007 The Fourth Way is based upon “The Sixteen Principles,” which emerged out of 20 years of consultations between Indigenous spiritual, cultural and community leaders. Slide 12: United Indians 2007 The “Sixteen Principles” are a framework for human and community development based on the ideas of sustainable change, healing and development that are at the core of tribal cultures around the world. Slide 13: United Indians 2007 The Fourth Way will be implemented in four areas: Slide 14: United Indians 2007 Diplomacy, in which Indigenous people work with governments to shape policy to lessen the extremes of wealth and poverty and to ensure Indigenous communities receive a fair share of their nations’ resources. Slide 15: United Indians 2007 2. Partnerships, between Indigenous peoples and governments, NGO’s, international development agencies, businesses, and between Indigenous communities of North and South America and beyond to share knowledge, capacity and resources for mutual aid, trade and development. Slide 16: United Indians 2007 3. Negotiation, in which Indigenous people will be able to work with the public and private sectors to address needs and concerns, and to capitalize on opportunities. Slide 17: United Indians 2007 4. Economic assistance, that includes improvements in education, health care, business development, cultural revitalization, a social safety net in Indigenous communities. Slide 18: United Indians 2007 www.fwii.net The time of the fulfillment of all the Sacred Prophecies is Now. As has been long foretold, it is time for Indigenous peoples across the Americas and beyond to stand up and take their place of leadership in the Sacred Circle of Life.
