A narrative is a story about a personal memory. But not just any old memory. It’s about a time so important you don’t ever want to forget it. : It’s about a time so important you don’t ever want to forget it. Good Choice Getting lost A scary event A new experience The loss of a pet A special moment with a friend or relative Bad Choice Combing your hair Eating dinner Getting out of bed An alien attack A ballgame A Personal Narrative is. . . : A Personal Narrative is. . . a true story. a story that happened to the writer. or an event that was observed by the writer. Once upon a time, I was Captured by aliens. They Put me in their Spaceship… Note: Not a good idea for a personal Narrative. Why? A Personal Narrative is . . . : A Personal Narrative is . . . a story about one event. not a list of things you did. Example: My Trip to the Fair Last Friday I went to the fair with my cousins. We looked at the cows and pigs. Then we ate cotton candy. Then we rode some rides. A better idea is to think of one special moment or event at the fair. : A better idea is to think of one special moment or event at the fair. Example: Round and Round It Goes Finally, we had done everything my little brother and sister wanted to do. It was time for my cousin and me to ride the Ferris Wheel. We handed our tickets to the ticket taker, climbed in, and fastened our safety belts . . . Note: A much better story. Do you want to know what happens? A Personal Narrative : : A Personal Narrative : is a story that is written in the first person. Uses these words: I, me, my, us, we Last summer I went to Nanny and Pop’s farm for the 4th of July. Pop surprised me with an old-fashioned tire swing. It is important to grab your reader’s attention right off the bat. Try to think of a great beginning. Example: Have you ever stood on top of a volcano? You might want to begin with a famous quote. : You might want to begin with a famous quote. Will Rogers once said, “Everything is funny as long as it happens to somebody else,” and I couldn’t agree more. I’ve been known to laugh at my friend’s new haircut. I confess I chuckled when my dog chewed up my mother’s new shoes. But I didn’t laugh so hard when the joke was on me. Example: Dialogue is another good way to begin your piece. : Dialogue is another good way to begin your piece. “Do what? You want me to do what?” I asked as my mother walked out of my room and down the stairs. Example: This kind of beginning hooks your reader immediately. They want to know what you’ve been told to do.
