Today we will learn a strategy to help with reading and test taking. Most strategies take a little time to learn, but once you know them, your tasks will be completed more easily and with greater success.

Slide 3:

Take for instance this baseball pitcher. Before he makes his pitch, he has to size up the game and the batter. He reviews the count. He checks to see where the runners are. He studies the batter and looks for a signal from the catcher. Only then does he decide on his pitch.

Slide 4:

UNRAAVELING a reading selection is very similar to what the pitcher does. Before you begin to read the selection, there are some things you can do to increase your chances of success.

Slide 5:

The players wants to win the game . You want to understand the text .

Slide 6:

The word UNRAAVEL is actually an acronym.

Slide 7:

Whoa! Wait a minute. What’s an Acronym ?

Slide 8:

An acronym is a word that is created from the first letter of several other words. Acronyms are often used to help us remember items in a list.

Slide 9:

Let’s take a look at the words used to create the acronym UNRAAVEL

Slide 10:

U - Underline the Title N – Now Predict the Passage R – Run through and Number the Paragraphs A – Are you Reading the Questions? A – Are the Important Words Circled? V – Venture (read) through the Passage E – Eliminate any Obviously Wrong Answers L – Let the Questions Be Answered

Slide 11:

Say what?! I have to do all that just to find the answer to a question?

Slide 12:

Remember, it may seem like a lot at first, but let’s go back to our baseball pitcher for a minute. He doesn’t wake up one morning knowing how to correctly pitch a baseball.

Slide 13:

First , the pitcher must decide the type of pitch he wants to throw. He must also consider how to hold the ball for that pitch. In addition, he must think about where he wants the ball to go. Finally, he must determine the speed at which he will throw the ball.

Slide 14:

At first our pitcher must practice, thinking about each step very carefully. But soon, the steps become natural and automatic. What once seemed difficult and time-consuming is now comfortable and efficient.

Slide 15:

So you’re saying, IF i PRACTICE THIS Strategy, it will become automatic?

Slide 16:

Reading is just like anything else you want to do well. It takes a little practice, but the results are worth it.
