Main Purpose:

Main Purpose The intention of my power point is a how to. This power point shows you how to drive a stick shift car.

Basics:

Basics First of all you need a stick shift car. Need to know what the pedals are for. The left pedal is for the clutch, the middle pedal is the brake, and the far right is accelerator.

Getting the engine started:

Getting the engine started To turn the engine on you have to have the car on neutral. You know that it’s on neutral when you can move the shifter with ease. To be a little bit more safe make sure that your E-brake is on. You know that the E-brake is on when the handle is pulled up.

Getting the engine started:

Getting the engine started The next step on getting the engine started is pushing the clutch (the far left pedal) all the way in, then turning the key to start the ignition.

How to get into 1st gear:

How to get into 1 st gear To get into 1 st gear you could now take your E-brake off, push the clutch all the way in and putting your shifter into first gear.

Lets get rolling:

Lets get rolling To get your car to actually start going you need to give it a little gas by stepping on the accelerator. While you’re giving it gas you need to be letting the clutch go out slowly. This procedure is very important because if you don’t do this step correct your car will shut off.

How to stop:

How to stop When you are trying to stop you need to push the clutch all the way. The reason to push your clutch all the way in is because it disengages all the gears. Don’t try to slow down by using the E-brake because if you pull the E-brake all the way up it will lock your brakes and you will have an uncomfortable stop.

Getting out of 1st gear:

Getting out of 1 st gear Getting out of 1 st gear is pretty tricky when you’re learning how to drive stick shift. If you do something wrong it will probably grind up the teeth on the gears. You don’t want to do that because it sounds very nasty. Grinding up the teeth will cost a lot to fix.

Getting out of 1st gear :

Getting out of 1 st gear So while you are going you will need to do the same procedure from getting into 1 st gear except that this time you’re actually moving.

Switching Gears:

Switching Gears Now you just have to do this for every gear. Be careful not to be grinding up your gears. Don’t forget to check your speed on your speedometer because it’s very easy to get lots of speed.

Car Safety Precautions :

Car Safety Precautions When you’re changing gears don’t let the RPM meter go to red because that will not be good for the car. Shown below.

Stopping at red lights/stop signs:

Stopping at red lights/stop signs Lets say that you’re on 3 rd gear and a red light is ahead, push the clutch all the way in so you could disengage all the gears and press the brakes. Then when you come to a complete stop you could put your gears into either 1 st or neutral and wait for the light. The reason that you don’t want to go down from a high gear all the way down is because your car still wants to keep on going the speed that it was going and shifting down to a low gear will make you RPM go really high.

Going up hill:

Going up hill While driving up hill with a stick shift is very tricky. The reason that its tricky because you have to give it more gas. If you don’t do it right you will shut your car, and make sure that you press the brakes quick because there will probably be a car behind you and you might hit because you’re rolling down.

Driving Downhill:

Driving Downhill When driving downhill you really don’t need to be in any gear. You could just leave it on neutral and let it row down. To be safe have your clutch in for and quick stops.

Parking on downhill street:

Parking on downhill street When you’re going to park on a downhill street you need to put the tire pushed on the side of the curb. You also need to put the car in reverse because the wheels are locked to go back and it wont roll down. Don’t forget to pull E- brake up.

Parking on uphill street:

Parking on uphill street When parking on an uphill street you need to put the wheel on the curb but instead of putting the front of the wheel to the curb, make sure that you put the back wheel from preventing the car from rolling down. On a downhill street, instead of putting it on reverse you need to put it into 1 st gear. And you also need to put the E-brake on.

Conclusion:

Conclusion From seeing this power point, you probably realized that driving stick shift isn’t a walk in park. I learned that when you are driving stick shift you need to have your clutch in all the way in so it could disengage your gears. Hopefully you a better idea on how to drive stick shift.
