Elizabeth Hignutt Grade 6 Geography Standard One 6-8a: Students will demonstrate mental maps of the world and its sub-regions which include the relative location and characteristics of major physical features, political divisions, and human settlements. Map : Map Tundra : Tundra Where on Earth? How’s the weather? Plants and Animals Where on Earth? : Where on Earth? The tundra surrounds the arctic North and South poles. Back Arctic : Arctic Climate : Climate Rarely above -18 degrees F: frozen ground: no trees Back Plants and Animals : Plants and Animals Scarce vegetation includes shrubs, sedges, mosses, lichens, grasses and about 400 varieties of flowers. Animals that live in the tundra include shrews, hares, rodents, wolves, foxes, bears and deer. See more plants and animals @ http://www.blueplanetbiomes.org/tundra htm Back TaigaConiferous Forest : TaigaConiferous Forest Where on Earth? How’s the weather? Plants and animals Where on Earth? : Where on Earth? Largest biome located below the tundra. Covers Canada and Eurasia Back Climate : Climate Temperatures range from –65 F in the winter to 70 F in the summer. Summer Winter Back Plants and animals : Plants and animals Birds migrate there every year to nest and feed. Finches, sparrows and crows stay all year long. Plants include lichens and mosses, but most are coniferous trees like pine, white spruce, hemlock and douglas fir. Evergreen trees are used for logging. Plants and animals Where on Earth?? : Where on Earth?? Found mostly in North America, Asia and Europe. Back Climate : Climate Forest has 4 distinct seasons; leaves change color and fall off The average annual temperature in a deciduous forest is 50° F. Summers averaging about 70 °F. Back Plants and Animals : Plants and Animals Deciduous forests have five different zones. Each zone has different species of plant life. See more about plants @ http://www.blueplanetbiomes.org/deciduous_forest.htm Forest animals forage for food and hibernate in the winter. Species chart @ http://www.flickr.com/photos/67747469@N00/6551672/ Back Tropical Rain Forest : Tropical Rain Forest Tropical rainforests produce 40% of Earth's oxygen. Where on Earth? How’ s the weather? Plants Animals Where on Earth? : Where on Earth? Found in South America, Africa, and Indonesia Rainforests now cover less than 6% of Earth's land surface. Back Climate : Climate Hot & humid; temperatures between 68 °F and 93 °F 100 + in. of rain per year Back Plants : Plants About 1/4 of all the medicines we use come from rainforest plants. A tropical rain forest has more kinds of trees than any other area in the world. Grows in three layers: floor, lower canopy, and upper canopy See more plants @ http://www.blueplanetbiomes.org/rnfrst_plant_page.htm Back Animals : Animals Each of the three largest rainforests--the American, the African, and the Asian--has a different group of animal and plant species. Endangered species due to deforestation See more animals @ http://www.blueplanetbiomes.org/rnfrst_animal_page.htm Back Grasslands : Grasslands Two different types: Grassy plains Savanna Grassy Plains : Grassy Plains Cool, few trees, used for farming/grazing Where on Earth? - North American prairie South American pampas - Asian Steppe View each one @ http://www.blueplanetbiomes.org/grasslands.htm Back Savanna : Savanna Tropical temperatures, dry/rainy season Where on Earth? -Africa -Australia See plants and animals @ http://www.blueplanetbiomes.org/savanna.htm Back Desert : Desert The wind shapes the land. Where on Earth? How’s the weather? Plants and Animals Where on Earth? : Where on Earth? Found in parts of North America, South America, Africa, Asia, & Australia The Sahara, in Africa, is the largest Grand Canyon in Arizona Back Climate : Climate Climate ranges from hot and dry during the day to cold at night. Back Plants and Animals : Plants and Animals Few plants; varies with conditions Mostly hoofed animals; reptiles and rodents burrow to avoid extreme temperatures See more plants and animlas @ http://www.blueplanetbiomes.org/desert.htm Back You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
