1. Theory: 1.1 Form: 1.1.1. Positive: Notes: I am  I’m; is ’s; are ’re For example: He is  He’s, We are We’re Pronunciation note: I’m [am]; He’s[ hi:z]; We’re[ wi:(r)] I am We, You, They + are He, She, It + is

1.1.2. Negative: I + am not + … We, You, They + are not + … He, She, It + is not + … 1.1.3. Interrogative: Am + I +… ? Are + we/you/they + …? Is + he/she/it + …?

Notes: We use the long form for writing and speaking and the short form for speaking only. There are two short forms for negatives E.g. You’re not / You aren’t But for I am there is only one! – I’m “I am not” is “I’m not” Is not  isn’t; are not  aren’t In interrogative, we use raising intonation at the end of these sentences.

1.2 Usage:  The simple present is used to express: 1.2.1. Personal information. Things about you! Namely your name, your job, your nationality, your maritual status and your feelings For example: He is Tom. He is a journalist. He is single. He is English. He’s happy now.

Moreover, we also use the verb Be for information about things. Ex: This is Helen. A cup of coffee is in her hands. A cup is a thing and coffee is a thing inside the cup. The cup is white. Information about the cup. The coffee is hot. Information about the coffee. So, we use the verb Be for information about people and things.

1.2 Usage:  The simple present is used to express: 1.2.2. A habit in the present For example: She is usually late for work. This tense often goes with adverbs of frequency: always, usually, sometimes, rarely, never, etc. For example: He is sometimes sad.

1.2.3. A fact which is always true For example: Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam. Liverpool city is in England. 1.2.4. A fact which is true for a long time For example: My mother is a nurse. He is an engineer.  Time expressions: - Every (day, Sunday, morning...) - At (weekends/ nights.........) - In the ( mornings/ afternoons... ) Ex: Everyday, I am at school until 11.15 a.m.
