When the Social Security system was implemented in 1935, the federal government began to assume the role of provider for senior citizens. Since then, several amendments to the act have added coverage’s like disability benefits and survivor benefits. In 1965, the role of the federal government as provider for senior citizens was significantly broadened with the enactment of the Medicare law. Since its enactment, various amendments and changes have shaped the coverage under this program as well.
